The trident of the seas is a one-handed powered staff requiring 75 Magic to wield. Once charged with runes and coins, it can be used to attack with a built-in magic spell regardless of the player’s current spellbook.

It is available as a task-only drop from cave krakens (or the kraken boss) with level 87 Slayer; normal cave krakens can drop an uncharged trident, whereas the kraken boss can drop a fully charged one. Similar to Barrows equipment, the trident is only tradeable when either uncharged or fully charged.

The trident of the seas has the same effect in drift net fishing as the merfolk trident,[1] though it does not have the ability to hold pufferfish charges (convenient for breathing underwater).

The staff's charge cannot be used against another player in dangerous PvP, only safe minigames.

A player using the trident of the sea's built in spell.

Charging

A player charging the trident of the seas.

To use the trident's magic spell, it must be charged with various runes, holding up to 2,500 charges when fully charged. One charge is consumed each time you cast the built-in spell. Charging the trident requires level 75 Magic, and the following items are required for a single charge:

Resource Cost per charge
1 x Death rune 188
1 x Chaos rune 105
5 x Fire rune 25
10 x Coins 10
Total cost per charge 328

To charge the trident, use the runes or coins on the trident. Assuming non-stop use (one cast every 2.4 seconds, 1,500 casts per hour), the trident costs 492,000 coins per hour to use.

Fully charging an uncharged staff costs 820,000 coins total: 2,500 death runes, 2,500 chaos runes, 12,500 fire runes, and 25,000 coins. Players can configure the charges while the weapon is in their bank by right-clicking on Configure-Charges, as long as players have the required materials.

Any remaining charges within the trident can be removed at any time using the 'uncharge' option. This will recover only the runes; any coins used to charge it will be permanently lost when the trident is uncharged.

If lost on death, only the uncharged trident will appear on the floor.

Rune substitutes, such as elemental staves or the Fountain of Rune cannot be used to charge the trident. Combination runes. such as lava runes, as well as runes stored in a rune pouch can be used. However, a trident charged with combination runes will always return fire runes when uncharged. This may lead to a potential loss of up to −470 per charge, when using steam runes.

Upgrading

Players with level 59 Crafting can attach a magic fang to the trident using a chisel, creating a trident of the swamp. In addition to a +10 magic attack bonus and a +3 bonus to the max hit, it also gains the ability to inflict venom on a target. However, the trident of the swamp requires using 1 Zulrah's scale (with a cost of 158 coins) instead of just 10 coins for each charge.

Players can also give an uncharged trident of the seas and 10 kraken tentacles to Lieve McCracken to create an enhanced trident of the seas, which holds 20,000 charges instead of 2,500. The same can be done with an uncharged trident of the swamp, which turns it into an enhanced trident of the swamp.

Maximum hit

Max Hit=⌊MagicLevel3⌋−5

The base maximum hit dealt by the trident is dependent on the player's current Magic level, starting at 20 with level 75 Magic and increasing by one every three Magic levels, up to a maximum of 36 at level 123+ (obtainable only through smelling salts in Tombs of Amascut). Both magic damage bonuses and visible stat boosts will modify the max hit of the spell; likewise, stat-reductions will lower the damage. Invisible boosts, such as from the trident's attack styles, do not affect the max hit. The trident always has a max hit of at least 1, even when reduced to 0 magic. Compared to the other two powered staves, the trident of the swamp increases the base maximum hit by 3 (max of 23 at level 75), and the Sanguinesti staff increases the base maximum hit by 4 (max of 24 at level 75).
