A player using Tumeken's shadow's built-in spell.

Tumeken's shadow is a two-handed powered staff requiring 85 Magic to wield, and is only available as a rare drop from the Tombs of Amascut. The staff is extremely valuable as, when matched with other high-end magic gear, it excels with its damage and immense accuracy even against magic-resistant monsters. Like most powered staves, it is only tradeable when it is fully uncharged.

Powered by the sun itself, the staff was created by the god Tumeken using an unknown artefact during the Kharidian–Zarosian War as a means to fight back against the invading force of the Zarosian Empire.[1] Tumeken also used it to create Tumeken's Warden and Elidinis' Warden, two massive automata imbued with the divine essence of himself and his wife Elidinis.[2] After Tumeken sacrificed himself to end the war, Elidinis gifted the weapon as well as her own ward to Osmumten before leaving to mourn her family.

As with all powered staves other than Thammaron's sceptre and the accursed sceptre, Tumeken's shadow is not able to use its built-in spell against other players outside of minigames.

Passive effect

Tumeken's shadow has a passive effect exclusive to its built-in spell, in which the player's magic attack bonus and magic damage are multiplied by three from the player's worn equipment (four within the Tombs of Amascut), capped at a total of 100% magic damage, although this threshold is not currently attainable except for within the Tombs of Amascut. This multiplicative effect includes tripling or quadrupling negative magic attack and damage bonuses.

The passive effect is extremely powerful with max mage gear, as it pushes the player's accuracy incredibly high, even when facing magic-resistant monsters such as General Graardor and Commander Zilyana. The staff's max hit also pushes higher with the maximum possible magic damage boost, even more than a sanguinesti staff and a fortified ward. It still hits lower than the twisted bow (when comparing both at max boosts), though it makes up for it for being more accurate in such cases.

The passive multiplicative effect does not amplify the Void Knight equipment, salve amulet(ei), or the imbued slayer helmet, although Tumeken's shadow still benefits ordinarily from these bonuses. For PvP, in scenarios where Tumeken's shadow can be used against players (such as minigames), the multiplier does not apply for balancing reasons.

Charging

To use the staff's magic spell, it must be charged with soul and chaos runes, holding up to 20,000 charges when fully charged. Each cast requires 2 soul runes and 5 chaos runes, costing 1,307 coins per cast. Players can configure the charges while the weapon is in their bank by right-clicking on Configure-Charges, as long as players have the required materials. Aether runes can be used in place of soul runes but will not be refunded if the staff is uncharged.

Resource Cost per charge
2 x Soul rune 782
5 x Chaos rune 525
Total cost per charge 1,307

The total cost to fully charge the staff with 40,000 soul and 100,000 chaos runes is 26,140,000 coins. Assuming non-stop use, with one cast every 3 seconds equaling 1200 casts per hour, the shadow costs 1,568,400 coins per hour to use.

Players can uncharge the staff whenever and wherever they choose, getting all of their runes back.

Maximum hit

The maximum hit dealt by the staff is dependent on the player's current visible Magic level; the formula is as follows. At level 0, the max hit is 1.

Max Hit=⌊Magic3+1⌋

Note that any magic damage bonuses are applied after the base max hit is calculated.

Trivia

  • Tumeken's shadow was proposed as a replacement for the Tumeken's heka as the "standout reward" for the raid in a newspost on 13 May 2022, due to player feedback on the desire for a magic weapon that would "redefine Magic as a combat style just as the Scythe [of Vitur] and Twisted Bow did." It was then polled in the Tombs of Amascut Reward Changes poll with the caveat that the heka would be replaced with Tumeken's shadow if it passed the poll; this came to pass with 90.9% support.
  • "Tumeken's shadow" is also the name of a quest NPC fought in the RuneScape 3 quest Missing My Mummy.

"When the Ruinous Powers arrived in their lands, Tumeken and his people found themselves facing an enemy unlike any other. He responded by hunting down a powerful weapon to use against this new threat – but when he found it, he decided instead to create the Shadow of Tumeken. This staff is powered by the sun itself, and with that brightest of lights comes the darkest of shadows…"
  2. ^ Akila. "The wardens". Old School RuneScape. "In war, great weapons can turn the tide against even the strongest foes, and legend has long spoken of Tumeken using a powerful staff to build two such weapons. It was believed any truth to these legends had long since been lost, but here in Osmumten's tomb, the truth is revealed: the weapons exist, and they are the prize the Devourer so fervently seeks. In truth, referring to Tumeken's creations as 'weapons' does them no justice. They are in fact two ancient automatons, built to embody Tumeken and Elidinis themselves and seemingly imbued with their divine essence."
