Poll

Polls are in-game votes in which players are asked to express their preferences for certain changes within Old School RuneScape. Only members with a total level of 300 or above and with a minimum total play-time of 25 hours can participate, though specific polls or questions may have additional requirements.

When a poll is live, players who log in and have not cast their votes will receive a message in the chatbox stating There's a poll running - head to the community section of the account management menu to cast your vote! Poll booths will also have a small raised flag to indicate that the player has not yet voted, and the Account Management Community tab will indicate that a poll is active, letting players vote from the tab. Town Criers in various cities also remind players to vote via overhead text.

Originally, polls were only held on the official Old School RuneScape website. Following the results of the Old School in-game poll survey, it was decided to add in-game poll booths. Players can no longer vote on the official website.

Polls on game updates use a plurality voting system to determine their outcome. Any question containing a Yes option requires a supermajority of 70% of the total votes to pass. This is not counting Skip question votes, an option introduced following the results of the Quality of Life - Top 10 Skilling Suggestions poll.

Placed votes cannot be changed, and every question must be answered to vote. A running tally could previously be found during polls at poll booths or on the official website. These and other aspects related to polling itself have also been subject of polls, but have historically failed to pass. Beginning 12 April 2019, all poll results are now hidden before the poll ends as part of a game integrity update.

The Polling Charter is a document published in October 2022 that standardises which changes must be polled, and which may be made unilaterally.

Changes that must pass a poll include:

• High-level concepts for new content
• Impactful new rewards
• Changes to existing content that would have a significant impact on players

Changes that do not require polling include:

• New game modes (e.g., Leagues, Deadman Mode, Community Events)
• Temporary events (e.g., holiday events)
• Graphical updates (e.g., asset visuals, UI enhancement)
• Bug fixes
• Quality of life enhancements
• Future changes to the polling system
• Changes in the interest of game integrity and balance
• Content targeting new players (e.g., Tutorial Island, Adventure Paths)
• Pricing changes for membership and bonds
• Diversity and accessibility changes
• Minor adjustments

Following the 2025 Poll System Improvements, three types of polls may be run via the in-game interface:

	Lock-in polls	Passing the 70% threshold means a commitment to release the proposed update, provided it remains reasonably possible to deliver throughout development.
	Greenlight polls	Passing 70% means a more complete design will be developed, then formally proposed via lock-in poll at a later date.
	Opinion surveys	Flexible questionnaires meant to gauge players' attitudes.

• The poll question with the greatest amount of support is at 98.97%, asking "Should it be possible for Group Iron players to increase the available Shared Storage slots as a reward for completing specific group tasks, as described in the blog? If this question passes, it will be possible for Group Iron players to unlock a maximum of 200 Group Storage slots." from Tombs of Amascut, Quests & GIM Improvements. Note that only Group Ironmen were able to vote on this question, and other players had this automatically skipped.
  • The greatest support, without game mode restrictions, is at 97.75%, asking "Should we add 24 more bank spaces to everyone's bank?", from Old School feature poll 15: Rejuvenating the Wilderness.
• The poll question with the least amount of support is at 21.4%, asking "Should we revert the despawn timer for dropped Clue Scrolls from 1 hour back to 3 minutes?" from Stackable Clues & Clue Despawn Timer.
• The majority of polls give the message "Thank you for voting." or "Your vote has been received." after voting. However, some polls have given custom messages instead:

  • Old School feature poll 4 – May 2013 - "Thank you for voting! Check out the 'Something Bigger' Dev blog for details of what might come in future polls."
  • The Big Four Priority Poll - "Thank you for voting!"
  • Goblin Invasion - Taking Down the High Priest - "Thank you for your advice. Meet us in the lair on Friday 16th August."
  • Kril's Magic Weapon - "Thank you for voting. The God Wars Dungeon will be released on 17th October."
