Barrows equipment refers to a number of sets of combat equipment found in the Barrows minigame. There are six sets of Barrows equipment: four for warriors, one for rangers, and one for mages. Each set has four pieces: a two-handed weapon (except for Ahrim's Staff, which after an update was changed to be a one-handed weapon like other staves in an effort to buff the weapon), a helmet, a torso piece, and legwear. When all four pieces for a particular brother are equipped, a special set effect is granted, which is different for each set. Additionally, the amulet of the damned enhances the set effects while equipped. Barrows sets cannot be made using the Smithing skill.

The Barrows gloves, which also resemble a piece of Barrows armour, are not obtained through the Barrows minigame and instead can be purchased after full completion of the Recipe for Disaster quest.

The equipment was given to the Barrows brothers by Sliske, who had collected it during his trips to many distant lands.[1]

Degrading

Barrows equipment degrades as it is used and has a total lifespan of 15 hours of in-combat use. Degrading occurs even if the player is using protection prayers and/or not taking damage. Once fully degraded, the equipment becomes unequipable and must be repaired to be used once again. Equipment received from the Barrows minigame is fully repaired. Barrows equipment does not suffer in performance as it degrades, but will lose all stat bonuses as well as its set bonus (if wearing a full set) when it becomes fully degraded. Fully repaired Barrows items start out with no numbers in their names and degrade in increments of 25%. The first time it's used in combat, it will immediately become <item name> 100, then upon further use 75, 50, 25 and finally 0 at which point the armour will be unusable until repaired (armour that reaches 0 whilst being worn will stay worn until removed, but cannot be reequipped if removed). Additionally, Barrows equipment may only be traded if fully repaired or fully degraded.

Each quarter consists of 250 degradable points, and cause the item to decay into the next named degradation state once they are fully depleted. A piece of barrows equipment will immediately degrade by 1 point when the player enters combat, and deduct one point for every 54 seconds (90 ticks) whilst still in combat.[2]

When dropped, any piece of Barrows equipment will automatically degrade to 0. Players who attempt to drop Barrows equipment will receive a warning message about this.

Barrows equipment stacks in bank with the corresponding item degradation, so if a Karil's crossbow has a degradation level of 100, it will stack with another Karil's crossbow if it also has a degradation level of 100. The item with the same degradation level will be taken out with the same amount of hits as before, so if a Karil's crossbow 100 has 180 ticks left before it will go to level 75 degradation, and that same one is in a stack with another crossbow that has 900 ticks before it will degrade further, the one you take out of the stack will be the one with 180 ticks left.

Repairing

There are two ways for a player to repair Barrows armour: talking to any of the NPCs listed below or repairing the pieces themselves using an armour stand in any player-owned house. The equipment can be repaired at any stage, and the cost will be adjusted according to how much it has degraded. The base repair cost of an item is determined by its internal degradation state (out of 1,000), multiplied by 100 coins when repairing a weapon; 90 coins when repairing a body slot item; 80 coins for a leg slot item; and finally 60 coins for a helmet.[3]

The following NPCs can repair the armour:

It costs less to repair Barrows equipment at an armour stand compared to paying an NPC. Stat boosts do affect the price of repair. The formula used to calculate the cost at a repair stand is:

CostAS=CostNPC×(1−Smithing Level200)

A player with a Smithing level of 60, for instance, would pay 70% of normal cost:

1−60200=70100

Simply put, every 2 Smithing levels reduces the repair cost by 1% when compared to an NPC vendor. At level 99 this equals roughly 50% in savings.

As barrows items have a "charges" mechanic that means they break when received as a drop from another player or when used until charges deplete, the price varies depending on whether they're undamaged pieces or broken pieces. The tables below show the prices of the individual items, the combined cost of the individual pieces in each set, and the cost of the item set.

Changes

Date Changes
8 January 2025
(Update)

Fixed an issue where pieces of Barrows kits would break prematurely when attempting to drop them with the 'valuable item' warning active.

18 June 2015
(Update)

Degraded barrows equipment, mage arena capes and achievement diary reward items are now also protected on death, outside of PvP, in line with other untradeable items.

Trivia

  • Upon release, Barrows equipment did not degrade; it was changed about a week later in an update due to outcry from players claiming it would devalue dragon equipment.
  • Prior to an update, Guthan's chainskirt had transparent sections, similar to ghostly robes.
  • Dharok's set is the only Barrows set that doesn't have an animation after activating its set effect.
  • Despite being followers of Saradomin, Barrows equipment does not provide protection from Saradomin's followers in the God Wars Dungeon (and the Wilderness variant).
