Onions are a food item that can be picked from fields around Gielinor or grown through the Farming skill at level 5 with onion seeds. They heal 1 hitpoint when eaten. When eaten, the message You eat the onion. is displayed. If eaten at full health, a message will appear saying, It's always sad to see a grown [man/woman/person] cry.. If eaten below full health, the message It makes your eyes water, but it does heal some health. is displayed instead. When picking onions from fields, members may randomly receive 1 onion seed.
They are used in the following recipes:
- Mushroom potato
- Ugthanki kebab
- Vegetable batta, veg ball, worm hole (Gnome cooking)
- Garden pie (temporarily boosts Farming level by 3)
Onions are purchasable from various stores for 3 coins each. Hudo at the Grand Tree has a stock of 10; Cobado's Groceries a stock of 10; and the Greengrocers of Miscellania a stock of 10, to name a few.
Unlimited onions can be taken from teak larders inside a player-owned house. They can also be gathered from the Theatre of Blood chest if the player died during certain fights. An onion spawns on the 1st floor[UK]2nd floor[US] of the Lumbridge General Store. There is an onion farming field located just north of Rimmington where 15 onions can be collected.
Members can store up to 10 onions in an empty sack, creating a sack of onions. 1 sack of onions is needed to protect growing cabbages and Asgarnian hops. Adding onions to a compost bin makes regular compost.
Two onions are used in creating yellow dye by taking them to either Aggie or Ali the dyer.
Uses in quests
A total of 19 onions are needed for completing every quest:
- Prince Ali Rescue: 2 × onions to make yellow dye
- Witch's Potion: 1 × onion
- Goblin Diplomacy: 2 × onions to make yellow dye
- Ghosts Ahoy: 2-6 × onions to make yellow dyes
- Mourning's End Part I: 2 × onions to make yellow dye
- Garden of Tranquillity: Onions are not directly needed for any specific purpose, but the player must grow one successful allotment of onions in order for Lyra to give them yellow and pink orchid seeds.
- Enlightened Journey: 2 × onions to make yellow dye
- Eagles' Peak: 2 × onions to make yellow dye
- Land of the Goblins: 2 × onions to make yellow dye
