The Mort Myre Swamp, once a forest known as Humblethorn,[1] is a swampland in western Morytania. Players first unlock the gate to the swampland by starting Nature Spirit, but the swamp can also be accessed by Barrows or Mort'ton teleport scrolls. Much of the swamp is plagued by ghasts, which attack players and rot food, as well as a swamp decay effect, hitting the player periodically. Both can be avoided by building a Fire of Dehumidification after completion of Making Friends with My Arm.
Layout
The swamp is divided into the main area, and the Hollows to the east. The path to Mort'ton is found to the south, on a bridge just south of the Nature Grotto.
Main area
The main part of the swamp is accessed by a gate west of Canifis, guarded by Ulizius, which is first opened during the Nature Spirit quest. In the far south-east is a bridge, leading to the southern part of the swamp. The eastern part of the swamp, the Hollows, can be accessed by a small break in the swamp weed just to the west of the boat (marked by a transportation symbol
on the map). In this area, players can also find:
- Nature Grotto - In the south-west of this part of the swamp is a Nature Altar, used during the Nature Spirit quest. Here, players can bless their silver sickle to make a silver sickle (b) and recharge their Prayer points. Filliman Tarlock is also found here.
- Fairy rings:
- Code ALQ for the ring in the Haunted Woods
- Code CKS for the ring just north of the gate to the swamp near Canifis
- Code BKR for the ring in the swamp south-east of the gate.
- After the In Search of the Myreque quest, code DLS can be used to access the Myreque Hideout which has an exit in the swamp at the Hollows and another behind the Hair of the Dog tavern in Canifis.
- Code BIP leads to an island near the Nature Grotto.
- The Fire of Dehumidification, removing swamp decay and the rotting of food via ghasts after being built.
- Several swamp tar spawns.
- Slimy eels are available at five Fishing spots in the area.
- Several pieces of dead vegetation, which players can use with the aid of a blessed silver sickle to fill a druid pouch to protect them from the ghasts. As well as filling a druid pouch, these Mort Myre fungi are used in Herblore.
Directly south of the swamp is a long, winding path leading to Mort'ton. There are no ghasts here, but plenty of snails. Players will also find Zealot at the very south of this section, at the entrance to the Abandoned Mine. It is here that players can start the Haunted Mine quest.
The Hollows
The eastern part of the swamp is itself cut in half, and is known as the Hollows. Players can only cross from the main area into here via a rope bridge, which they mend during the In Search of the Myreque quest. Here, players can find:
- The Myreque Hideout, guarded by Curpile Fyod. It contains a tunnel leading to a trapdoor south of the Hair of the Dog pub in Canifis, and it can only be accessed for further use after the quest is complete. The hideout provides a quicker way to Mort'ton than walking through the main and southern parts of the swamp, and is also safer, as players will encounter significantly fewer ghasts.
- A Hunter area where players can catch swamp lizards.
- Swamp boaty - Cyreg Paddlehorn's swamp boaty, unlocked after the Nature Spirit quest, can be taken to Mort'ton.
- A mysterious graveyard lies just north of Castle Drakan, known as the Morytania Graveyard. This is where Dessous resides during the Desert Treasure I quest.
Navigation

Directly on the right, there is a map that might be useful for navigation through the confusing swamp of Morytania. It can be used to get to or back from Canifis, Mort'ton, Burgh de Rott, Barrows, etc.
Several routes to Barrows have been drawn:
- The Red direct teleport option Barrows Teleport (tab) from the Arceuus spellbook is the fastest.
- The Dark Blue path is the next shortest route making use of the Shades of Mort'ton minigame teleport. This option only works once every 30 minutes, and requires completion of Shades of Mort'ton.
- The Green path is next, requiring the use of Mort'ton teleport scrolls, received as a reward from clue scrolls.
- The Orange path requires the completion of the Morytania Hard or Morytania Elite Diary. Using the Morytania legs 3 or 4 received as a reward, you can teleport directly to Burgh de Rott.
- The Light Blue path is the moderate route that goes directly to the Hollows and the Swamp Boaty without using the Canifis Myreque Hideout route. As it makes use of fairy rings and the swamp boat, it requires starting Fairytale II - Cure a Queen and completion of Nature Spirit.
- The Pink path is one of the longest routes and makes use of the Myreque Hideout underground tunnel, requiring near full completion of In Search of the Myreque. The entry point of the hideout tunnel-network is located at the back of the inn in Canifis.
- The Yellow path is a tedious route, but skips past most of the Ghasts. Occasionally a ghast will wander in range of the fairy ring, though. Also required starting Fairytale II - Cure a Queen.
- The most tedious route that leads through the swamp itself is via walking. This will take the longest, and players will suffer more ghast attacks, but one does not need to complete any quest besides Priest in Peril to use this path. There are multiple paths, all starting at the gate in the left top, eventually following the same route as yellow past the bridge in the left bottom.
Additionally, not drawn here, one can use the Temple Trekking Minigame to get from Burgh de Rott to Paterdomus quickly, after In Aid of the Myreque. Inversely, after Darkness of Hallowvale, Burgh de Rott Ramble can be used to get from Paterdomus to Burgh de Rott quickly. Simply assist an easy companion over an easy route.
The horrors within
Entering the swamp subjects players to swamp decay, an area effect that hits them for between one and three damage. This damage can kill players. Equipping a blessed silver sickle, Rod of Ivandis, Ivandis flail or Blisterwood flail (or simply having them in the inventory), will prevent the decay timer from starting. Alternatively, after Making Friends with My Arm, players can build the fire of dehumidification, which nullifies swamp decay and the food rotting effect of ghasts.
Several monsters also reside in the swamp:
| Monster | Image | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| Ghasts |
|
Souls of the dead that will deal damage, drain Prayer points, and rot the food in a player's inventory. Players who have completed the Nature Spirit quest, can fight them with a silver sickle (b) and a druid pouch with at least one charge. Alternatively, an Ivandis flail (after A Taste of Hope) or Blisterwood flail (after Sins of the Father) will work as well. |

Aggressive snails which drop coloured shells. Using a chisel on the shells creates a snail helmet. They also drop edible snail meat. The snails attack with what appears to be a Magical ranged spell, and Protect from Missiles is the only Prayer that seems to have any effect. |

Trivia
- If a player attempts to open the gate without starting Nature Spirit, they will notice a message on the gate saying Mort Myre is a dangerous Ghast infested swamp. Do not enter if you value your life. All persons wishing to enter must see Drezel.
- If a player exits Mort Myre through the gate to Canifis, Ulizius exclaims Oh my! You're still alive!
- "Mort" is a word used in several languages and originating in Latin, meaning dead or death, while "mire" is a term for wetland terrain such as swamps.
