The Mad Angel is a golem boss found in Ardeaglais, a cathedral on the island of Wyrmscraig. A weak version of it is fought during the quest Fallen From Grace, and a stronger, repeatable version becomes available after quest completion.
Rewards from the Mad Angel include the two-handed sword Hallowfell, granite dust, jar of Light, the pet Aggy, and the Ardeaglais teleport to the boss.
History
The Mad Angel is a golem created by Elessia to help protect the people of Wyrmscraig after she left the island, being driven to leave after her condition drove her to kill Keenan. It is temperamental, causing it to attack the player, but Elessia hoped in time the people of Wyrmscraig would be able to fix its flaws.[1]
Location
The Mad Angel is located in Ardeaglais, the cathedral found on the southern side of Wyrmscraig; the necklace of passage teleport to Wyrmscraig is located to the east, while the slayer ring can teleport to Wyrmscraig Cavern, a short distance away from the cathedral's basement.
Fight overview
The Mad Angel attacks primarily with melee, and is weak to golembane weapons; Protect from Melee will reduce the max hit of its standard attacks from 31 to 5. After three standard attacks, it will perform a special attack.
Upon reaching 350 Hitpoints (~45%), the Mad Angel will enter the enrage phase at the next available opportunity, denoted by a ...! overhead message. During this phase, its special attacks are performed quicker, requiring quicker reaction times to counter them. Additionally, it will use all three of its specials consecutively at the start of this phase.
- Sweep attack - The Mad Angel stands still, drawing its sword back to either the left or the right. After a few seconds, it will cleave the area towards the side where the player was, as well as the side it drew the sword back from. In order to dodge the cleave, the player must run to the side of the boss opposite the sword or behind it. If an attack is successfully dodged to the side (not behind it), the player's next attack will be 100% accurate and have its minimum hit raised to 50% of their maximum hit. Protect from Melee will reduce the damage from being caught in this attack by ~50%.
- Blast attack - The Mad Angel launches a ball of light towards a destination tile, indicated with a looming shadow on the floor. If it reaches this destination, it will explode and deal 30+ damage to the entire arena. Standing on the destination tile will instead bounce the ball of light back to boss, dealing 18-22 damage to it. The Mad Angel continues to perform its standard attack during this sequence. The explosion's damage can be reduced by ~50% with Protect from Magic, however it is possible for a standard attack to land during the same tick.
- Smite attack - The Mad Angel brings the sword towards its chest, then begins charging a lightning attack that must be protected from with Protect from Magic. Simply having the prayer overhead will reduce the damage by ~75%, but activating the prayer at the same tick that the lightning strikes will fully negate the damage, as well as guarantee a maximum hit for the next attack. The timing to perfectly negate the attack requires that the player click on Protect from Magic 4 ticks (2.4s) after the attack begins charging, when the blue crackling first becomes visible. Players may also react to a visual cue, by activating the prayer when the boss's wings flap slightly once fully extended. 1-tick prayer flicking will ensure the damage is negated entirely, and guarantees the max hit.

Development history
As with many aspects of Wyrmscraig, the Mad Angel was designed by the player ScreteMonge (under the psedonym RoseNMcGeet) as part of the Player Designed Island Competition. She was outlined to have two basic mechanics: a "perfect parry" in which activating a protection prayer to the tick her attacks land nullifies damage and removes the player's next attack delay (similar to protecting against Sol Heredit's Triple Attack), and "directional weakness", in which attacking the Mad Angel from a particular angle while it is weak guarantees a max hit.

Rewards from the original proposal of the Mad Angel include vials of icyene blood, used to make the potion of the winds (increases the frequency of gusts of wind while not in a Barracuda Trial) and the potion of flight (a one-use teleport to the player's respawn point that could be used above 30 Wilderness if not in combat, but with an interruptible casting animation similar to Home Teleports), the angelic heart (a weaker version of the imbued heart that could boost Magic up to +8), and Elessia's Blade, a two-handed sword with a variable attack speed depending on the selected attack style. These rewards were largely overhauled:
- The potions were scrapped, as Jagex did not want to introduce any more potions into the game at the time. However, they noted that the effects of the potions could be introduced in other ways.[4]
- The angelic heart was scrapped due to it being too powerful compared to the boss's difficulty and requirements, along with its potential impact on ancient brews and forgotten brews.[5]
- Elessia's Blade was reworked into Hallowfell, with its variable attack speed removed due to it being too difficult to balance[6] and replaced with a multi-target passive effect.
Jagex's initial reward proposal for the Mad Angel included an upgrade to the basalt amulet that teleported the player to the boss; the amulet would have been rewarded upon completion of Fallen From Grace. Due to player feedback that the amulet provided unnecessary teleport bloat,[7] it and the upgrade were scrapped, with the upgrade being replaced with teleport scrolls to the boss.
Trivia
- The monster's examine text, "O Lord, she approaches!" references the Chonk / Oh Lawd He Comin' meme.

I have been a fool for so long now, and enough is finally enough. To the people of this island: know that you will be plagued no longer by my madness. The death of this boy will be the last. In my place, I leave this golem. Be careful around it, for it is unrefined and temperamental. A pyrophoroi I am not. However, in time, and with some work, I hope you will be able to use it. "Although we're not looking to discuss rewards from this boss in detail until our next blog, we do want to clarify one thing: the 'Angelic Heart' reward proposal in Gnome's original design is not something we're currently planning to move forward with.
The main reason is that the proposed boss, and its requirements, don't feel like the right place for such a powerful reward. Additionally, the team also have a few more reasons based on balancing:
- If the Angelic Heart were weaker than Forgotten or Ancient Brews, it likely wouldn’t feel particularly satisfying to use.
- Current rewards (Forgotten/Ancient Brews) from Muspah and Nex also sit behind significantly higher-level content, so we don't think it would be appropriate for this boss to creep into that reward space.
- If it were stronger than them, then it would sit too close to the Imbued Heart and make the Heart feel like a less meaningful upgrade.
- If the Angelic Heart were weaker than Forgotten or Ancient Brews, it likely wouldn’t feel particularly satisfying to use.

"During development, we explored Gnome's earlier concept for the sword that had multiple different combat modes. While we loved the idea, testing showed that it didn't fit particularly well with our existing equipment design and was difficult to balance in a way that felt consistently fun to use. Rather than shipping something that didn't meet our expectations, we went back to the drawing board and landed on this new design, which we hope you'll love!"
