Freeze, also referred to as Bind, Entangle or Root is a Status effect which restricts movement of affected players and NPCs, rendering them immobile for a period of time without disabling other actions. Due to the specialised nature of Freezes (i.e., restricting only movement) they usually last significantly longer than Stuns.
Mechanics
Freeze restricts movement for a duration dictated by its source, followed by a short immunity to the Status after which the target can be frozen again.
Freezes have both a variable duration, and a variable immunity based on the source of the effect. For example, Ice spells have a duration dependent on the tier of spell used, starting at 8 ticks when using Ice Rush and increasing by 8[1] for every tier of spell, with a freeze from Ice Barrage lasting up to 32 ticks (19.2 seconds). The immunity window for most freezes (with the exception of Grasp spells) is 5 ticks (3s). For Grasp spells it is only 2 ticks (1.2s).
Freeze only restricts regular movement, but not forced movement such as caused by Mithril seeds and Adamant seeds or by interacting with adjacent game objects such as ladders or cave entrances.
In PvP, all freeze effects applied to other players will only restrict movement whilst both players remain within the 10-tile maximum player weapon range. Moving outside of this range will cause the frozen target to become free to move. The game code only checks the X and Y coordinates of both players, meaning a player who changes plane by e.g. going up a ladder will be able to maintain a freeze as long as they stay within the X and Y coordinate of their target.

Weapons
Abyssal tentacle
The Abyssal tentacle has a special attack, Binding Tentacle, which freezes a target for 8 ticks (4.8s) regardless of whether it landed a successful hit.
Zamorak godsword
The Zamorak godsword has a special attack, Ice Cleave, which freezes a target for 32 ticks (19.2s) provided that it lands a successful hit.
Spells
Freezes are available on three different spellbooks with each type serving a different purpose. The only spellbook without any Freeze capability is the Lunar spellbook.
The following tables will list durations in ticks, where each tick is equal to 0.6 seconds of real time. To learn more about ticks please refer to the Game tick page.
Curse spells
There are three Curse spells on the Standard spellbook which can apply Freeze. These spells do little or no damage, have no requirements other than Magic level, and the first two can be used by free-to-play players.
When a Bind-type spell is about to expire the chat box will report: The holding effect is beginning to fade.
There is no message upon the spell being applied.
Blighted entangle sacks allow players to cast these spells in lieu of using runes while in the Wilderness.

Ice spells
Ice spells are one of four types of Ancient Magicks combat spells, and the only type that can apply Freeze. Ice spells are notable for high damage and Area of Effect capability, giving players the ability to freeze multiple targets at the same time.
Upon being affected by an ice spell the chat box will report: You have been frozen!
When the effect is about to expire the following message notifies the affected player: The freeze cast upon you is beginning to thaw.
Blighted ancient ice sacks allow players to cast these spells in lieu of using runes while in the Wilderness, PvP worlds, Castle Wars, Clan Wars, or Soul Wars. Keep in mind switching weapons will cancel auto-casting when in the Wilderness.

Grasp spells
Grasp spells are a category of offensive spells in the Arceuus spellbook. Unlike Ice or Curse spells which serve to immobilize for a long period, Grasp spells offer a short freeze with a short immunity period whilst also dealing considerable damage. Unlike other sources of Freeze, Grasp spells are not guaranteed to freeze the target with the exception of Undead Grasp whilst under the effects of Mark of Darkness.

Equipment
Certain equipment can increase the duration of, or otherwise synergise with specific sources of Freeze.
Swampbark armour
The helm, body and legs of Swampbark armour each increase the duration of freezing Curse spells from the Standard spellbook by 2 ticks, up to 6 ticks provided that all 3 aforementioned pieces are equipped. The gloves and boots do not provide any additional effect.
Blue Moon armour
Wearing the full Blue Moon armour set, the player gains the Frostweaver set effect, where after casting a Freeze spell the Blue Moon spear has a 20% chance for its next melee attack to be unaffected by attack delay. This chance increases to 50% when using the Arceuus spellbook Grasp spells.
Tome of Water
The accuracy of all Curse spells from the Standard spellbook, including the ones capable of freezing, is increased by 20% when wielding a charged tome of water.
Ancient sceptre
The passive effect of an Ancient sceptre will increase the freeze duration of Ice spells by 10% while equipped by the player.
Ice ancient sceptre
The Ice ancient sceptre passively grants a 10% accuracy bonus to Ice spells on targets that can be frozen and are not currently frozen on top of the Ancient sceptre's base 10% duration increase.
Trivia
- The official name of this status effect per Monster Examine is Freeze, however other popular community names include Bind or Entangle after the spells of the same name (the former being the first spell of this type available, and the latter having been the best spell of its type until the release of Ice spells along with Desert Treasure) and Root, a loanword from other games with a similar immobilising mechanic.
