Stun (status)

On this page
A player being stunned by another player through the use of the Shove special attack of the Dragon spear.

Being stunned is a temporary status effect rendering an affected entity unable to perform most actions for a short period of time. Different types of stuns inflict different action restrictions, and are often accompanied by yellow circling birds around the head of the entity that persist until the effect expires. Certain types of Stalls fall under stuns.

Mechanics

Stuns disable a player's ability to perform several game actions such as attacking, consuming items, changing equipment, casting spells, and taking damage. This usually accompanies the inability to move, akin to Freeze. A stun will disable different game actions depending on the source, and thus it is possible to take advantage of different stuns and stalls in creative ways.

Most stuns will disable taking damage until the stun expires, at which point every attack stored in the "combat queue" will be applied at the same time, potentially leading to extreme amount of damage being dealt in one tick and resulting in death unless a form of clearing the combat queue is used, such as a Phoenix necklace.

Activities

Thieving

When a player fails to pickpocket a target, they are temporarily stunned, as well as take damage specific to the Thievable NPC. The player will be prevented from moving for 9 ticks (5.4 seconds), and prevented from further pickpocket attempts for 8 ticks (4.8 seconds). Wearing a Dodgy necklace gives the player a 25% chance to avoid stuns upon failure. This stacks multiplicatively with the Shadow Veil spell, where Shadow Veil will attempt to avoid the stun first for a total of 36.25% chance to avoid the stun. Gloves of silence reduce the chance of failure by 5%. The Thieving cape provides an additional 10% chance of being successful.

Despite being unable to move or pickpocket while under the effects of this stun, the player can perform other actions as usual such as consuming items, changing equipment and teleportation.

Pheasant Control

In the Pheasant Control Forestry event, pheasants will stun players who attempt to steal eggs from their nest for three seconds.

Barbarian Assault

In the Barbarian Assault minigame, players can fire blue eggs at Penance, stunning them temporarily. Penance cannot be attacked while stunned, including firing further eggs at them.

Hallowed Sepulchre

Players may encounter lightning strikes in the Hallowed Sepulchre minigame. If the player is hit by one, it will stun the player for three seconds.

Brine Rat Cavern

When entering the Brine Rat Cavern by digging next to the windswept tree north-east of Rellekka, you drop down into the cave stunned and unable to move nor perform any actions for a brief time.

Weapons

Ancient wyvern shield

Discharging an ancient wyvern shield will unleash a freeze blast attack at a target, which has a chance of briefly stunning them.

Blackjacks

All blackjacks share the same passive effect that will occasionally stun a target in combat, causing the target to briefly stop attacking. Better material causes a longer stun, and the chance to stun is dependent on the amount of damage dealt.

Enchanted jade bolts

Enchanted jade bolts and their dragon version have a passive effect that will cause the target to be knocked to the ground. When used against players, the effect also rolls against the target's Agility level; as such, players with a high Agility level will be very resistant to this.

Shove

The following weapons share the Shove special attack which stuns a target for three seconds:

Targets affected by Shove will be fully stunned. The special attack can only be used on targets that take up one square. There is no immunity and thus the stuns from Shove can be chained.

Monsters

Monsters that are capable of stunning the player:

  1. ^ 1.0 1.1 Visually looks like a freeze, but prevents eating and teleportation alongside restricting movement.

Stalls

Stub This section is a stub and needs expansion.

Stalls are a subtype of stuns which are self-applied by the player either through interacting with specific objects in the game world, or by using specific items. Unlike stuns which are applied externally and usually serve as a punishment mechanic, Stalls are usually an unintentional result of the game's method of handling actions. Animation stalls which do not restrict the player's movement or actions are not included in this section.
