Barrels are found in the Shaman Caves accessed during and after Legends' Quest. They are located around the winch leading down to the Viyeldi caves. Smashing a barrel will reveal a random item, a random monster, or both.

To reach the area containing the barrels, one must have started the Legends' Quest and passed through the third Ancient Gate in the dungeon (for explicit directions, please refer to the Legends' Quest page).

Smashing the barrels

The success of opening the barrel is dependent upon Attack levels. By selecting the 'smash' option on a barrel, one (or more, in some cases) of the following can occur:

One of the following monsters will appear:
- Black Knight
- Chaos dwarf
- Dark warrior
- Dark wizard
- Deadly red spider
- Death wing
- Giant bat
- Giant rat
- Giant spider
- Hill giant
- Hobgoblin
- Moss giant
- Mugger
- Scorpion
- Skeleton
- Zombie
A random item(s) could appear on the ground
The player could be unable to smash the barrel
The barrel could explode, resulting in a random amount of damage between 6 and 12
The player's Attack level could be temporarily reduced by 1-3 levels

After a barrel is opened, it will respawn in a random location in the room.

Trivia

There is currently a glitch that will cause the player's cannon to disappear if a barrel respawns on top of it. Logging out and back in again will not cause it to reappear; it must be reobtained (for free) from Nulodion.
In RuneScape Classic, instead of noted items, the barrels gave certificates (an early version of bank notes that only worked for a small subset of items). The barrels could drop every type of certificate that existed prior to the release of Legends' Quest. When RuneScape 2 was launched, certificates were replaced with notes, in smaller quantities.
