Unwelcome neighbours

Speak with the Observatory professor, located in the reception room of the Observatory near the Observatory tower, north of Castle Wars. Ask him about the Observatory and he will mention that goblins have recently moved in and tampered with its telescope. To repair it, he needs three planks for the tripod, a bronze bar for the tube, and molten glass for a new lens.

Talk to him again three times, and he will take each item from you. Once you give him the final item, he will mention you also need to retrieve a mould for the new lens that has been stolen by goblins. Make sure the professor has taken all of the items before continuing, otherwise you will need to repeat the next section.

Retrieving the lens mould

Items recommended: An antipoison potion, energy potions, combat equipment (for lower levels) and food
Note: If you don't have a form of antipoison, you can pick up a superantipoison at a spawn in the corner of the south-eastern building near Greasycheeks and Smellytoes's fire.

Go down the stairs to the east of the reception room to find the Observatory Dungeon (the room with the stairs is directly east of the start point). Once down the stairs, you must find the goblin kitchen key. It is commonly found in the south-eastern most chest although it can vary from person to person. Search any chests you pass on the way to the south-eastern chest just in case. Once you search the correct chest, complete the dialogue or you won't receive the key.

Note: Sometimes there may be a poisonous spider (level 31) inside the chest.

With the key, follow the north-eastern path west to the kitchen gate. "Prod" the sleeping guard (level 42), who will wake and attack you. Kill him or get him stuck behind a wall and you will be able to pass through the gate.

Note: Getting him stuck will cause him to attack you again when you leave, and another sleeping goblin will spawn.

Open the kitchen gate, consuming the key, and then inspect the goblin stove. You determine the goblins are cooking something foul in the lens mould. Dump out the stew and bring the mould back to the professor.

After speaking to the professor, his assistant will interject and ask you to make the new lens yourself as the professor has a history of explosions when attempting to craft things.

Use the molten glass that the professor just gave you with the lens mould to craft him a new lens. Give it back to the professor. He will want you to visit him in the Observatory.

The Observatory

Climb back down the stairs into the Observatory Dungeon. Now follow the north-west passage (past the kitchen) to find some stairs leading to the Observatory (the southern set of stairs on the map). There is also a chest north-east of the stairs to the Observatory, which spawns infinite Antipoison(1) vials, which you can combine to make full vials.

Go up the stairs, and a cutscene will play. If the cutscene does not play, you may have forgotten to give the finished lens to the professor. After the cutscene ends, go up the stairs and talk to the professor, and then "view" the telescope to see a constellation.

After closing the window, the professor should ask you which constellation you saw. The constellations are on wall charts in the main level of the Observatory. Identify your constellation, talk to the professor again, and you should get your reward in your inventory.

  1. ^ 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 Constellations that reward combat experience will not be assigned to players who are level 1 in the corresponding skill.[1] Beware these constellations can still be assigned to accounts that have started Observatory Quest prior to 8 November 2018, the implementation date of a pure protection mechanism.[2]

Congratulations, quest complete!

Quick checklist 15 instructions

Use this when you already know the route. The full walkthrough above includes explanations and diagrams.

Fixing the Observatory

  1. Speak with the Observatory professor.

Say: Talk about the Observatory quest. → An Observatory? → Sounds interesting. How can I help?

  2. Give the Observatory professor the three planks, bronze bar and molten glass (speak to him 3 separate times

Say: Talk about the Observatory quest. each time).

  3. Speak to the assistant.

  4. Go up the east hill and down the stairs.

  5. Once downstairs, search all the chests until you find the goblin kitchen key (most commonly found in south-eastern part when you go down the stairs, don't skip the dialogue once you find the key or you will not pick it up. If not found in the two chests directly south-east from the stairs, it is guaranteed to be in the last chest in the dungeon. The other chests will contain poisonous spiders.).

  6. Head north from the entrance in the dungeon, then go west to the kitchen gate and prod the sleeping guard, then kill or trap him.

  7. Open the gate and inspect the goblin stove.

  8. Go back and speak to the professor with the lens mould in your inventory.

Say: Talk about the Observatory quest. He will give back the needed molten glass for the next part.

  9. Use the molten glass on the lens mould.

  10. Speak to the professor to give him the lens mould and the observatory lens.

Say: Talk about the Observatory quest.

  11. Head back into the goblin dungeon.

  12. Run past the kitchen and climb up the stairs in the south end of the dungeon. (During the cutscene, DO NOT CLICK on anything in the observatory or you'll have to restart the cutscene)

Finishing up

  1. After the cutscene, talk to the professor upstairs and view the telescope.

Say: Talk about the Observatory quest.

  2. Talk to the professor again and identify the constellation you saw (see table below).
