Walkthrough

Starting out

Items recommended: Transportation method to the Odd Old Man

Head to Silvarea, located within a mountain range to the north-east of Varrock, by the map icon, along the path to the Paterdomus Temple. The ring of elements teleport to the Earth Altar and balloon transport system are a short distance from Silvarea.

Talk to the Odd Old Man by his house just north-west of the mining site. He will claim to be an archaeologist collecting bones for the Varrock Museum. After he mentions being a few bones short, ask if there is anything you can do to help. When he asks the player to help grab some, agree to start the quest. After appearing to communicate with the bone sack on his back, the Odd Old Man will list a number of monsters that the player should kill to retrieve the bones. He will also describe the process of cleaning the bones, which will need to be done before handing them in.

Collecting the bones

Below is the list of monsters that need to be killed to obtain all the bones (8 total). Each bone is a guaranteed drop.[1] A player may choose to polish and then turn in a bone or bones at any point, but it is recommended to wait until all 8 have been retrieved to save time. For a suggested path to retrieve all 8 at once, see the following section.

Note: For monsters with an ensouled head drop, it is possible to use them to obtain the bones, by using the Reanimation spells from the Arceuus Spellbook near the Dark Altar.

Suggested paths

Dousing the bones in vinegar

Items needed: 8 pots and at least 8 coins to purchase 8 jugs of vinegar

Head to Draynor Village and talk to Fortunato in the marketplace just west of the bank. Though initially offended when the player asks for vinegar, he will quickly agree once the player mentions the Odd Old Man sent them. Purchase 8 jugs of vinegar, then use them on your pots to make 8 pots of vinegar. Finally, use all of the gathered bones on the pots to make 8 bones in vinegar.

Polishing the bones

Items needed: 8 bones in vinegar, tinderbox, 8 logs of any type with the Firemaking level to burn them, or an axe to gather them
Items recommended: A teleportation method to the Odd Old Man (Varrock teleport, Digsite pendant).

Return to the Odd Old Man once ready to polish the bones. An example of what an inventory may look like before heading back to the Odd Old Man can be seen on the right.

Warning: In the following section, be careful that you do not accidentally "empty" a bone in vinegar, because if you do, you will lose the bone and have to collect that bone again.

To start polishing the bones, use a log on the pot-boiler by the Odd Old Man. Then, use a bone in vinegar on the pot-boiler, and finally, use your tinderbox to light it (you will not receive experience for lighting the logs). It takes 12 seconds for each pot to boil. You can hop worlds after lighting the logs to skip these 12 seconds. Repeat this for all eight bones.

Talk to the Odd Old Man with all of the polished bones in your inventory. He will thank the player for the help, asking them to bring any more bones they find.

Congratulations, quest complete!

Trivia

  • Rag-and-bone man is a British phrase for a junk dealer. Historically, the phrase referred to an individual who would travel the streets of a city with a horsedrawn cart, and would collect old rags (for converting into fabric and paper), bones for making glue, scrap iron and other items, often trading them for other items of limited value.
  • The bones scattered in and around the Odd Old Man's house have many interesting "examine" texts (a good activity to partake in while waiting for the bones to be polished). One such skeleton states "What a waste of prayer xp!" Examining the pot-boiler at the various stages of boiling the bones will also give interesting texts, the one while the bone is boiling being: "This smells so very, very bad..."
  • Previously in the game, the special bones were common drops, rather than guaranteed drops.
