Banknote

A bank note or note is a stackable certificate that represents an item. It is equivalent in value to the item it represents, but cannot be used physically until exchanged for the real thing. Almost all tradeable items can be 'noted' and 'unnoted' in the bank interface, with very few exceptions (such as mysterious emblems).

Notes are useful for players who wish to trade large numbers of items at a time. They can also be used for training magic or for converting into coins via the Low or High Level Alchemy spells.

Storing a note in a bank, selling it to a shop, or 'using' it on a bank booth, bank chest, or banker will convert the note to its item equivalent. Players do not need to enter their Bank PIN to unnote items.

For a small fee, items may also be unnoted by banknote exchange merchants when farther from a bank. This may be useful when training skills that require a lot of resources. These include:

• Phials in Rimmington
• Aisles in Tai Bwo Wannai
• Tiles in the Bandit Camp
• Biles on the Tear of the Soul (requires 61 Sailing)
• The Banknote Exchange Merchant in Pollnivneach
• The Elder Chaos druid outside the Chaos Temple (bones only)
• Virilis on Ralos' Rise (bones only)
• Servants in player-owned houses (excluding bones)
• Isles after bringing him to Grimstone (metal bars only)

A separate set of NPCs will note items, including:

• Piles in the Wilderness Resource Area
• Tool Leprechauns (harvested Farming items only)
• Snowflake in Weiss (basalt only)

• In RuneScape Classic, players could only get certificates for a few selected items—the item can then only be "un-noted" by the shop of which it can be bought from.
• The actual bank note item is unobtainable by players, and uses the name Template for cert.
• According to Drezel during Priest in Peril, bank notes contain text reading "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the listed number of <item>s".
  • This is likely in reference to Bank of England banknotes, which bear the text "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of <value> pounds".^[1]
• The Bank Note system is loosely based on the old English monetary system, in which a pound note entitled you to the ownership of a 1lb of sterling silver that was under safe keeping of the bank. This is similar to how noted items entitle you to the ownership of said items under safe keeping of the bank.^{[citation needed]}
• When attempting to make a Troll Stronghold or Weiss portal without the required items, you are told "You need 1000 x basalt (certed)" rather than noted.
