QUEST 53 · MEMBERS

Elemental Workshop I

Hundreds of years ago, a mineral was found that had the ability to change the property of Magic. The magicians, fearing the effect this may have on their profession, sealed this Workshop forever; or so they had hoped. See if you can rediscover the lost knowledge of elemental ore.

Bound under lock and key

Head to Seers' Village and into the house immediately south-west of the bank, indicated by the quest start icon. Search the bookcase on the east wall to receive a battered book. Read it to start the quest.

The book details the discovery of a new ore in the Fifth Age, and the workshop erected to work the new material. After the true power of the unique ore was realised, the workshop was closed and bound under lock and key. The book hints that the secret to entering the workshop lies within it.

After reading it, use a knife (one spawns in the house north of the church) or slash weapon on the book to get a battered key, turning it into a slashed book in the process. Do not drop the slashed book.

Enter the northern building with the anvil icon, and use the key on the odd-looking wall with the strange crack. Climb down the stairs you find there to enter the workshop.

Restarting

Skills needed: 20 [boostable] to fix the bellows, 20 [boostable] to mine an elemental rock

In the northern chamber is an inactive water wheel, with two water controls to the west and east of it. Turn the east water control and then the west one to change them both to green (this must be done in order, turn the west one back if you turned it first). After this, pull the lever next to the water wheel. The water wheel should now be spinning.

Next you will need to repair the bellows, found in the eastern chamber. If you did not bring leather and a needle, they may be found in a crate in the north-western part of the central room, and a stacked crate in the western room respectively.

Fix the bellows with a spool of thread and leather ( 20 ), then pull the lever next to it. The bellows should begin pumping air.

Head into the western cavern and attempt to mine an elemental rock ( 20 ). The rock springs to life, yells, and attacks you. Kill the earth elemental, and pick up the elemental ore that it drops. The elementals walking around do not count; it must be an elemental awoken by an attempt to mine them.

Tip: Kill two more if you want to save time for Elemental Workshop II, or three more if you also want a Mind shield after completing that quest.
Tip: You may choose to kill one of each elemental in the workshop to complete an easy Kandarin Diary task. You must kill a regular earth elemental for this, not the ones that are mined first.

Finally, head back to the central chamber. Search the boxes north-east of the hatch to obtain a stone bowl. Fill it with lava from the lava trough in the southern chamber, then use it on the furnace to the east in the same chamber. The inside of the furnace should now glow orange.

A lost art

Skills needed: 20 [boostable] to smith elemental metal and elemental shield

Proceed to use the elemental ore, along with four coal, on the furnace to obtain an elemental metal ( 20 ). If this does not work, ensure that you used the elemental ore on the furnace rather than the coal, and that both the water wheel and bellows were successfully activated in the previous steps.

With the slashed book in your inventory, use the elemental metal on the workbench in the centre to make an elemental shield ( 20 ). If you are unable to craft the shield, destroy the slashed book and obtain a new one from the bookcase.

Congratulations, quest complete!

Tip: You may choose to create more shields after the quest, returning with the battered key, slashed book and 4 coal to smelt with the elemental ore. The shield may also be sold on the Grand Exchange for 1,459 gold, costing 592 to create.
Quick checklist 26 instructions

Use this when you already know the route. The full walkthrough above includes explanations and diagrams.

Getting Started

  1. In Seers' Village, go to the house immediately south of the anvil.

  2. Search the bookcase on the eastern wall to find a battered book.

  3. Read the book, then use a knife on it to get a Battered key.

    • There is a knife spawn in the house north of the church if you forgot to bring one.

    • Note: You'll need the book later, so don't get rid of it.

  4. Go to the building with anvil and open the Odd looking wall in the north (with the key in inventory).

  5. Go down the stairs.

Repairing the Workshop

  1. Go into the room to the north.

  2. Turn the water controls east of the water wheel.

  3. Turn the water controls west of the water wheel.

  4. Pull the lever by the water wheel.

  5. (Optional) Kill one of each of the Elemental to complete Kandarin Easy Task. For the Earth Elemental, you must defeat one of the actual Elementals walking around; the rock that turns into the Elemental won't count towards the requirement.

  6. (Optional) To obtain leather, search a crate north of the staircase in the middle room.

  7. (Optional) To obtain a needle, search the two stacked crates on the left as you enter the west room.

  8. Go to the eastern room.

  9. With a needle, thread, and leather, fix the bellows.

  10. Pull the lever by the bellows.

  11. Go to the middle room and search the boxes in the north-east to get a stone bowl.

  12. Go to the south room.

  13. Use a stone bowl on the lava trough to the south.

  14. Use the bowl of lava on the Furnace in the room.

Finishing up

  1. Go to the western room and mine an elemental rock.

  2. Kill the Earth elemental and pick up the elemental ore it drops (get 2 more ores if you are planning to do Elemental Workshop II).

  3. Use the elemental ore and four coal on the furnace in the southern room. You will get an Elemental metal.

  4. With the slashed book, go to the middle room and smith an elemental shield by using the elemental metal on the workbench.

  5. Congratulations, quest complete!
