There are many guards in Gielinor, usually in populated, major cities, such as Falador, Varrock, Ardougne, and others. Guards also patrol the area just south of the wilderness ditch at Edgeville.

Their level ranges from 19-22, and they are quite weak. None of the guards are aggressive unless attacked first. Guards can be pickpocketed at level 40 Thieving, giving 46.8 experience and 30 coins. Besides the ones listed on this page, other guards whose pockets can be picked include the Port Sarim jail guards, Hosidius guards, Shayzien guards, along with the guard loitering east of Doric's hut.

A large variety of guards exist in addition to the ones that can be robbed, like for example the unique level 1337 guards found in Deadman mode, who will kill anyone who enters a safe zone while skulled instantly.

Guards are a popular source of clue scrolls due to their low level and ability to drop medium clue scrolls. Completing the medium Falador Diary allows the player to have a 20% increased chance of receiving a clue scroll drop from guards in Falador.

Pickpocketing

A way to efficiently thieve from Guards is to complete the Recruitment Drive quest, set Falador as one's spawn point, and then pickpocket Falador guards until inevitably dying in the process. Upon death, it is possible to run straight back and pick up any coins that one died with.

Killing an Ardougne guard for a key to be able to search the drawers on the 1^st floor^[UK]2^nd floor^[US] of Jerico's house in East Ardougne is the solution to the medium cryptic clue: In a town where thieves steal from stalls, search for some drawers in the upstairs of a house near the bank.

Edgeville and Falador guards had festive overrides wearing santa hats during the 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025 Christmas events.
The crossbow-wielding guards of Falador use the Karil's crossbow animation when firing.
The Falador Guard scene from Garden of Tranquillity, in which the short lifespan of a Falador Guard is discussed, is a reference to The Royal Flying Corp episodes of Blackadder Goes Forth.^{[citation needed]}
Guards in Varrock used to wear unique armour and weapons that mirrored those of a Renegade knight, but have since been given models reminiscent of an older art style, while retaining the yellow and grey colours of the city they protect.
