The dying tree

Ensure you have two free inventory slots, then speak to King Narnode Shareen on the ground floor (UK) of the Grand Tree. He will take you underground to show you the roots of the tree, which appear to be dying. He will give you a translation book and a bark sample and ask you to take the sample to Hazelmere, the last surviving gnome mage involved in creating the tree.

Hazelmere is found on a small island east of Yanille, upstairs in his house. There are jungle spiders (level 44) on the way, although they are not poisonous.

Talk to Hazelmere, who will take your bark sample, and after examining it, give you a message written in his language.

Return to King Narnode in the Grand Tree, who will ask what the translation is. The correct translation can be deciphered using the translation book and reads:

A man came to me with the King's seal.
I gave the man Daconia rocks.
And Daconia rocks will kill the tree!

Give him the correct translation from the options offered, selecting none of the above for the first two choices. (Chat 1•5•5•2•1•4)

1I think so.
5None of the above.
5None of the above.
2A man came to me with the King's seal.
1I gave the man Daconia rocks.
4And Daconia rocks will kill the tree!

The king will exclaim that someone must have forged his seal to obtain the Daconia rocks, which were made as a "fail-safe" and are the only thing that can kill the tree. He will direct you to talk to Glough, his head tree guardian.

Charlie the prisoner

Items needed: 1,000 coins (if you haven't helped Femi)
Items recommended: Fast travel to Tree Gnome Stronghold
Glough's house location. Open interactive map ↗Map data and tiles: OSRS Wiki · Game imagery © Jagex Ltd

Glough is located in a treehouse south of the Grand Tree, east of the ramp by the hot air balloon. After remarking that humans can't be trusted, he will tell you that he will take care of the problem.

Return to King Narnode Shareen, who informs you that Glough has caught and imprisoned a human found with the Daconia rocks.

Talking to Charlie.

Head to the top floor to speak with Charlie the prisoner. He tells you that Glough paid him to retrieve the rocks from Hazelmere. He doesn't know what Glough is up to, but suggests you search Glough's house for evidence.

Go to Glough's house and search the cupboard to find his journal, which describes how he plans to convince the tree gnomes that humans are naturally evil and must be destroyed. Confront Glough, who calls a guard over to lock you in the cell next to Charlie's. Talk to Charlie, who mentions he delivered a large amount of gold to the shipyard on Karamja. He suggests you give the foreman there a visit to covertly see if he knows what Glough is up to, and gives you the password to access it, which is Ka-Lu-Min.

The king will appear and apologise for Glough imprisoning you. He will tell you that guards are watching the entrances, and tells you to quickly escape on the Gnome glider on the top floor of the Grand Tree, next to the cells. Talk to the pilot. He will ask you where you want to go and you will ask him to fly you to Karamja.

Karamja investigation

The glider will crash land just west of the Shipyard. Run east, avoiding the aggressive level 53 jogres, and attempt to open the gate to the Shipyard. A shipyard worker will stop you; tell him Glough sent you, then give him the password Ka-Lu-Min.

Once inside, find the level 23 foreman on the southern docks. You may either kill him or talk to him to receive a lumber order.

If you choose to talk to him, tell him Glough sent you, then answer some personal questions about Glough. He will ask how his wife is, select "Sadly his wife is no longer with us". He will then ask what his favourite dish is, select "Worm holes".

Finally, he will ask for his new girlfriend's name, which is "Anita". (Chat 3•2•1)

3Sadly his wife is no longer with us!
2He loves worm holes.
1Anita.

You need to return to The Grand Tree to show the king the lumber order which is evidence of Glough's invasion plans, but Glough has ordered the guards not to let you in. If you have completed the Tree Gnome Village quest, you can sneak in by using the Battlefield spirit tree or the Grand Exchange spirit tree.

Alternatively, talk to Femi by the gate to the stronghold. Tell her you need to get inside, and she will sneak you in. She will help you for free if you never entered the stronghold through the gate before, or if you chose to help her move boxes the first time you entered. If you chose not to help her when you first entered, she will charge you 1,000 coins.

Tuzo

Skills needed: 25 [boostable] to climb the watchtower

After you show the king the note from the foreman, he still will not believe your accusations, call you as paranoid as Glough, and ask you to leave for your own safety.

Speak to Charlie the prisoner again on the top floor of the Grand Tree, who says he heard Glough mention a chest key that he left at his girlfriend Anita's house. In the north-west corner of the stronghold, climb up the most north-western ladder by the tortoise pens to speak to Anita and she will give you Glough's key and ask you to return it to him.

Go to Glough's house, and use the key to open the chest. Inside, you will find his invasion plans detailing his plan to seize control of Gielinor. Click continue to receive the plans.

Ensure you have four free inventory spaces, then take the invasion plans to the king. He will still not believe you, stating that anyone could have made the plans. He will give you four bundles of twigs, which was all his guards could find when searching Glough's house.

Return to Glough's house, and climb up the watchtower. This tree is located on the east side of the 1st floor (UK) by the chest and requires 25 to climb. Up in the watchtower, you will find a stone stand and four pillars. Use the twigs with the four pillars to spell out TUZO, starting from the far left. Using the Translation book, this translates to "open." After you have placed the twigs on the four pillars, you will hear gears turning, activating the trap door on this platform, but do not go in yet unless you are prepared for the fight.

Encountering the Black demon

Items needed: Combat equipment and food to last in a fight against a level 172 Black demon
Safespot 1: The recommended safespot located directly north of the entrance ladder.

Climb down the trapdoor into the cave below, and Glough will appear, threatening you with his plans to wipe out humans. Complete the conversation without interacting with anything else, or you will have to re-enter and repeat it. A level 172 black demon will appear down the tunnel and immediately attack you.

It can be fought with any combat style, but can be safespotted with Ranged, Magic or a halberd. To safespot, immediately move one tile to the north and then east (adjacent to the ladder, see the picture).

Magic is recommended, as the demon has a negative magic defence bonus. Use water spells if available to you as it has a 40% weakness to water spells.

Note: If the demon is not killed within 10 minutes, it will disappear and the battle needs to be restarted. To do so, walk through the tunnel and leave through the ladder next to King Narnode Shareen, and re-enter Glough's trapdoor.
Note for 10HP pures: With Bind, it is possible to kill the demon with a cannon with at least 120 cannonballs. When the scene begins, use Bind on the demon immediately and set up the cannon just 2-3 spaces west of the ladder you used to enter. If you die during setup the cannon will remain. You will know the cannon is in the right area if you can reload it from the ladder safespot. If the cannon aggros a rat during the fight without killing it, the cannon may stop firing, and you will need to take aggro from the demon by moving forward and back, or lure the rat away.

The adamant king

After defeating the demon, walk along the passage until you find King Shareen standing by a ladder. Talk to him and tell him that Glough sent a demon to attack you. Not believing you, he will finally send a guard to scout for Glough, finding him hiding amongst the stones. The king apologises, and asks you to locate the last Daconia rock.

Ensure you have one free inventory space, then search the roots all around the area until you find the Daconia rock. It may be in any of the roots, so keep going until you have found the rock. Click continue once you find it or it won't appear in your inventory. If you somehow lose the rock, it'll spawn in the root where you first found it.

Talk to King Shareen again for your reward for saving the Grand Tree.

Congratulations, quest complete!

Quick checklist 30 instructions

Use this when you already know the route. The full walkthrough above includes explanations and diagrams.

Getting started

  1. Speak to King Shareen in the Grand Tree with two empty slots to receive a translation book and a bark sample.

Say: You seem worried, what's up? → I'd be happy to help!

  2. Talk to Hazelmere in his house on the island east of Yanille (fairy ring code: CLS). He will take your bark sample and give you a message for the king.

Glough

  1. Return to King Shareen. He will ask what the message says. Tell him:

Say: I think so. → None of the above. → None of the above. → A man came to me with the King's seal. → I gave the man Daconia rocks. → And Daconia rocks will kill the tree!

  2. Head south. At the bottom of the incline, turn east and go up the ladder to speak with Glough.

Investigation

  1. Return to King Shareen, and he will tell you that Glough has caught a human. Ask to see the prisoner.

  2. Talk to the prisoner Charlie on the top floor of the Grand Tree. Make sure to finish the entire conversation!

  3. Go to Glough's house. Search the cupboard, and you will find his journal.

  4. Talk to Glough and wait to be arrested.

  5. Talk to Charlie; he will tell you about the shipyard on Karamja; the password is Ka-Lu-Min.

  6. The king appears and tells you to escape using the gnome glider on top of the tree.

  7. Travel with the glider.

Karamja

  1. The glider will crash near the Ship Yard. Run east past the level 53 jogres to the Ship Yard gate.

  2. Open the gate and tell the worker Glough sent you, then give the password Ka-Lu-Min.

Say: Glough sent me. → Ka. → Lu. → Min.

  3. Find the Foreman on the southern dock. Kill him or talk to him to get a lumber order.

    • If you talk to him, he will ask you some security questions.

Say: Sadly his wife is no longer with us! → He loves worm holes. → Anita.

  4. Take the lumber order to the king. (Teleport into the stronghold or get Femi to sneak you in, costing 1,000 coins if you didn't help her earlier). The king will not believe you when you show him the lumber order.

Tuzo

  1. Speak to Charlie again on the top floor of the Grand Tree.

  2. Speak to Anita up the stairs west of the swamp, north-west of the Grand Tree. She will give you a key.

    Say:

  3. Go to Glough's house, and use the key to open the chest and take the invasion plans. Make sure to complete the dialogue window to receive the plans!

  4. Take the invasion plans to the king. He will give you four letters made of sticks (you'll need 4 empty inventory spaces).

  5. Climb the watchtower in Glough's house (tree in the east part of his house). Use the sticks with the four pillars to spell out TUZO. If you are under 25 Agility, eat your summer pie now.

  6. Bank if needed and prepare for the battle, then go down the trapdoor.

Encountering the Black demon

  1. After you enter and talk to Glough, a level 172 black demon will appear and attack you.

    • Immediately after the cutscene ends, run to the tile directly north of the ladder. The black demon will become stuck behind the daconia rocks in front of you as he approaches. Attack with ranged, magic, or a halberd.

    • Warning: The demon will despawn after a while if it is not killed within 10 minutes exactly. If this happens, you'll have to exit through the ladder in the centre of the cave and go through Glough's trapdoor again.

  2. Kill the demon. Walk along the passage until you find King Shareen standing by a ladder.

  3. Talk to the king, and he will ask you to locate the last daconia rock. Fully complete the dialogue; otherwise, you cannot continue.

  4. Search the roots until you find it (make sure to click continue on the dialogue when you find the stone).

  5. Talk to the king one last time.
