Magic secateurs

Magic secateurs are obtained during the quest Fairytale I - Growing Pains from Malignius Mortifer, south of Falador.

They are most commonly used for increased harvest yield when farming (see below for more information).

It is the only weapon in game that is capable of damaging Tanglefoot. Despite having a higher slash stat, the magic secateurs are considered a stab weapon.

If players lose their magic secateurs before defeating Tanglefoot, they must reacquire them by taking the required items back to the Nature Spirit; otherwise, after defeating Tanglefoot, additional pairs may be purchased from Malignius Mortifer for 40,000 coins each. Tool Leprechauns located at each Farming patch can store magic secateurs in the normal secateurs slot.

When equipped or in the inventory, the magic secateurs increase the base chance of additional crop yield beyond the minimum number, by 10%, for the following sources:

• Herb patches
• Allotments
• Celastrus trees
• Grape vines
• Bushes
• Limpwurt plants
• Hop patches
• Coral nurseries^[1]
• Yield from Herbiboars^[a]

However, the secateurs do not increase yield for the following sources:

• Seaweed^[2][3]
• Crystal trees^[4][3]
• Cacti^[3]
• Belladonna^[3]
• Any crops with a set yield:
  • Mushrooms
  • Flowers, other than limpwurts
  • Tree roots
  • Fruit and Calquat trees
• Hespori loot

• Players can also use a pair of magic secateurs to create the Otherworldly theme in the theme space of a Superior garden in a Player-owned house. Doing so consumes the magic secateurs and a new pair will need to be acquired again.
• Magic secateurs do not count as a weapon when travelling to Entrana, as there is a hops patch on the island.
• Players who play with a limited account build such as some Defence Pure builds, or accounts that do not increase Strength, Ranged, Attack or Magic can obtain the magic secateurs half way through the quest without fear of gaining any unnecessary combat experience. Skiller account builds cannot obtain the magic secateurs as prerequisite quests reward experience in a variety of combat skills.
• Just like normal secateurs, magic secateurs can be used to cure the disease of trees by using the secateurs with the tree. Furthermore, they can be used to obtain willow branches from farmed willow trees. Up to 6 willow branches can be cut at a time, after which the branches regrow one at a time at regular intervals of approximately 5 minutes.

• The crop yield bonus of magic secateurs works even if the quest Fairytale I - Growing Pains is not completed.^[5]
• When Fairytale I - Growing Pains was first added to the game, the magic secateurs would one-hit players or other NPCs other than the Tanglefoot due to a programming oversight. It was fixed very shortly after release.^[6]
