Traditional Firemaking consumes one log for a fixed experience award. Level determines which logs can be lit, while positioning determines how smoothly a line can continue.

Firemaking
Use logs for the first few levels, then Wintertodt offers a more varied path to 99.
Wintertodt damage scales with Hitpoints, so some accounts prefer doing it early.
UNDERSTANDING FIREMAKING
Learn the system before you optimise the loop.
Firemaking is a artisan skill with several viable routes. The best method is not automatically the one with the largest experience-rate number: startup time, travel, real input prices, useful outputs, and the amount of attention you can sustain all belong in the decision.
This guide treats levels as unlocks rather than a single uninterrupted race to 99. Use the route below as a strong default, then switch when a quest, diary, equipment upgrade, or account goal makes another method more valuable to you.
Wintertodt is a skilling boss with reward points, supply crates, and damage based partly on the player's Hitpoints and warm clothing.
Forester's Campfires provide a stationary alternative with reduced experience per log and much lower click intensity.
Because the skill consumes valuable logs, compare Firemaking goals with Construction and Fletching needs on self-sufficient accounts.

Levels 1–30: Creating pyre logs
1-tick creating pyre logs offers the fastest experience up to level 30. Pyre logs can be created without tick delay by holding down 1 or space and rapidly using sacred oil on logs. This requires completion of the Shades of Mort'ton quest. Pyre logs can be created at level 1, even if the logs would require a higher level to burn. Without tick manipulation this method offers much lower rates and is only viable as a potential money making method.
It is recommended to create redwood or rosewood pyre logs, as they have demand for cremating urium remains and they give the highest experience per log. Prices may vary, and re-selling other pyre logs than redwood or rosewood might be difficult. Check trade volume and actual prices in the Grand Exchange before attempting this method.
With decent banking and accurate clicks, players can create 4,600 pyre logs per hour when 1-ticking. This translates to 92,000 experience per hour with redwood or rosewood logs. Without tick manipulation, players can only create 1,470 pyre logs per hour (29,400 experience per hour with redwood or rosewood logs).

Levels 1/30–99: Burning logs
Burning logs is one of the fastest ways to train Firemaking. The best place to do this is at the eastern part of the Grand Exchange. The area has a lot of empty space and the bank is only one tile away from an area a log can be burned. When correctly timed, the player can move to another square in between lighting the logs, which allows the player to burn the logs in any formation. With fast enough banking and accurate clicks, it is possible to keep lighting the logs tick-perfectly every 4 ticks. Having noted logs in the inventory and unnoting them at the banker is recommended over using the bank interface.
An easier but a slower alternative is to simply burn logs in a row from east to west. The best place to do this is at Varrock: use Varrock Teleport, light the logs from the fountain and bank at the Varrock west bank. Alternatively, use Camelot Teleport and bank at Seers' Village.
The table below assumes 1,485 logs are burned per hour. Coloured logs offer the fastest experience rates for levels 1–30 as they are guaranteed to be lit successfully. See Calculator:Firemaking/Logs for a detailed gp/xp analysis of the logs that can be burned at each level, including burning logs from sailing.

- Alternatively, at level 92, players can burn 24,318 rosewood logs to reach level 99. This will save about 2,346,435 compared to reaching 99 with redwoods, at the cost of an additional four hours.

Levels 1–99: Burning logs on a campfire
Burning logs on a forester's campfire is a low-effort alternative to the faster methods. Choose a location where a campfire can be lit right next to a bank, such as the Grand Exchange, Rogues' Den, or the Crafting Guild. Burning an inventory of logs takes around 150 seconds.
Experience rates and costs are shown in the table below. The first log added to the campfire takes 6 ticks to burn, and the following logs take 9 ticks. Allowing the logs to continue to be added to the campfire automatically results in roughly 665 logs burned per hour, while tending to the campfire manually while holding down spacebar results in up to 975 logs per hour.

FOUR EDITORIAL STARTING POINTS
Shortlisted routes with executable instructions.
Use the finder above for the complete method library. These four routes are the fan-guide shortlist: each includes its setup, repeatable sequence, realistic rate band, and most important failure point.
1–99 • HIGH ATTENTION
Conventional log lines
Fast deterministic XP
Consumes logs
Grand Exchange, Varrock, or another long clear line near a bank
Tinderbox and the chosen log level
Tinderbox plus 27 logs
- Choose logs from current GP/XP rather than price alone.
- Run a clear east-west line and light each log consecutively.
- Bank with a fixed withdrawal layout and turn before obstacles stop the line.
50–99 • MEDIUM ATTENTION
Wintertodt masses
Variety and collection rewards
Reward crates offset supplies
Wintertodt Camp
50 Firemaking, four warm items, food
Warm clothing, axe, tinderbox, knife/hammer as strategy requires, food
- Join an official world and enter with enough warm items.
- Chop roots, optionally fletch, feed braziers, and repair when safe.
- Reach reward eligibility but prioritise survival over one extra action.
50–99 • HIGH ATTENTION
Wintertodt solos
Reward points and side XP
More rewards per game
Wintertodt private/quiet instance
Solo control knowledge and longer supply plan
Warm gear, food, knife, hammer, axe, rejuvenation supplies
- Lower Wintertodt's energy, then maintain it in a controllable band.
- Rotate between roots, fletching, feeding, and repairs for points.
- End the game only after the intended reward threshold.
Variable • LOW ATTENTION
Forester's Campfires
Stationary low-attention training
Consumes logs more slowly
A suitable Forestry campfire
Forestry access and logs
Logs and Forestry kit as needed
- Use a campfire near convenient banking or a Forestry group.
- Add logs automatically for a long stationary action.
- Treat reduced experience as the price of lower attention.
FIREMAKING CALCULATOR
Turn a level goal into hours and materials.
Select a method for its realistic experience-rate band. Add XP and GP per action when you want an exact resource estimate for your chosen item.
The level formula is exact. Time and budget are planning estimates: your equipment, banking, failures, attention, and live Grand Exchange prices determine the real result.
SETUP PROGRESSION
Upgrade the part that actually controls the rate.
| Stage | Setup | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Line fires | Tinderbox and clear lane | Location and banking define throughput. |
| Wintertodt | At least four warm items | Warmth reduces incoming damage frequency. |
| Wintertodt utility | Best usable axe, knife, hammer, food | Carry only what the chosen strategy uses. |
| Campfires | Forestry kit and selected logs | Compare log value with the reduced XP rate. |
THE ROUTE
From level 1 to cape
1–30
Burn normal through willow logs
Use long, open east–west lanes and a tinderbox. The opening objective is access, not perfect efficiency. Use quests and inexpensive equipment to compress levels where possible, and avoid over-investing in a method you will outgrow quickly.30–50
Maple logs or quest rewards
The objective is simply reaching Wintertodt eligibility. This is where the skill settles into a repeatable loop. Upgrade the parts of the setup that affect every action, measure a representative session, and keep travel or banking from becoming the hidden bottleneck.50–90
Wintertodt
Solo for construction-style rewards or mass worlds for easy, repeatable games. At the mid-game checkpoint, compare the fastest route with account progress, useful outputs, and attention. A slightly slower method can be more efficient overall when it also supplies quests, diaries, or another skill.90–99
Stay at Wintertodt or burn logs
Redwoods are faster and costly; Wintertodt keeps reward crates coming.Late-game training is a sustainability problem. Recheck prices and unlocks, alternate high-focus sessions with calmer ones, and choose a route you can repeat without turning the cape into a chore.Forester’s Campfires exchange speed for a more relaxed, stationary training loop.
LEVEL REFERENCE
Milestones worth planning around
These are decision points, not instructions to stop. Boostable requirements and quest gates can change when an unlock becomes usable.
| Level | Unlock | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | Oak logs | An inexpensive early upgrade. |
| 30 | Willow logs | Common route toward Wintertodt. |
| 45 | Maple logs | Cheap members training supply. |
| 50 | Wintertodt | The defining alternative training activity. |
| 60 | Yew logs | Faster traditional lines at higher cost. |
| 90 | Redwood logs | Fastest conventional log tier. |
QUEST ROUTING
Let account progress do part of the grind.
Quest experience is most valuable when it skips slow early methods or opens a training system you will keep using.
Sea Slug
Not a Firemaking quest, but often paired in efficient early skilling routes.
Making Friends with My Arm
Involves warmth and fire-related requirements while expanding herb patches.
Desert Treasure I
Includes a Firemaking requirement in a major account unlock quest.
CHOOSE YOUR ACCOUNT
The route changes with the rules you play by.
Spend for the time you value
Wintertodt is the default varied route, while line fires purchase faster experience with logs. The best method depends on whether reward crates and engagement matter more than finishing speed.
Optimise the whole supply chain
Wintertodt supplies are attractive early, but crate rewards scale with relevant levels. Save valuable logs for construction or bows when those uses exceed their Firemaking value.
Know the edge of the map
Free-to-play training is conventional log burning from normal through yew. Members gain Wintertodt, campfires, redwoods, better axes, and far more teleport options.

Should Wintertodt be done at low Hitpoints?
Low Hitpoints can make food management easier because of its damage formula, but it is not mandatory. A developed account has better food, teleports, and gear.
When should I open supply crates?
If reward value matters, higher related gathering levels can improve some outputs. If early supplies matter more, opening immediately is reasonable.
Game updates can change rates, requirements, and best methods. Check the community reference before a large purchase.
