A raw karambwanji is a brightly coloured untradeable fish that may be caught at level 5 Fishing using a small fishing net at the Holy Lake south of Tai Bwo Wannai on Karamja (fairy code CKR). The raw version is used as bait to catch raw karambwan. It is also notable as an easily obtainable, stackable raw fish with the only requirement being 5 Fishing, making it ideal for feeding pet cats and fighting hell rat behemoths.

The amount of karambwanji caught depends on the player's Fishing level, increasing every five levels. The exact formula is ⌊FishingLevel/5⌋+1; players will catch 20 raw karambwanji at a time with a Fishing level of 95 or above and will catch 21 to 22 raw karambwanji at a time when boosting beyond 99. 5 Fishing experience is granted per catch, not per individual fish. The player can continue fishing for raw karambwanji even if their inventory is full. If there is room in the inventory, there is a chance to catch raw shrimps.

The benefits from either Rada's blessing or spirit flakes will give the player a chance to catch double the amount of raw karambwanji (for example, a player that catches 15 raw karambwanji will instead catch 30). They cannot be stored in a fish barrel. They can, however, be stored in a tackle box, as they are considered bait.

To use it to fish karambwan, players must load a raw karambwanji into a karambwan vessel and then use the vessel with one of the karambwan fishing locations in the north-east of Karamja to fish karambwan. Upon catching a karambwan, the vessel will automatically be reloaded with a new karambwanji from the inventory.

It is ground into raw karambwanji paste for Tai Bwo Wannai Trio. During the same quest, it may be cooked into karambwanji, but it cannot be cooked after completion of the quest. After completing the quest, raw karambwanji may be bought from Tiadeche for 10 coins each. He stocks 50 per world.
