A dark essence block is an item created by using dense essence blocks on the Dark Altar located in the northern area of Arceuus. Dense essence blocks are mined nearby using a chisel and a pickaxe.
Each dark essence block created gives 2.5 Runecraft experience while draining 1 prayer point. They can still be made without any prayer points remaining.
Dark essence blocks are used in the creation of Arceuus spellbook teleport tablets (instead of soft clay) at the lectern located in the Ouditor's house in Arceuus whilst being on the Arceuus spellbook.
Dark essence blocks can also be used with a chisel to create 4 dark essence fragments per block, which are runecrafted into blood runes and soul runes. When crafting blood runes, each dark essence block is worth 97.7 experience, including the 2.5 experience gained when imbuing the block at the dark altar. This increases to 121.3 when crafting soul runes.
Dark essence blocks disappear upon death.

- Using a block on the Blood Rift which does not consume the dark essence and permanently unlocks free transport through the rift.
