A chain is an item used to link two cannonballs together to create two chainshot cannonballs for boat combat. These require the same Smithing level, and gives the added bonus of halving a target's movement speed for 8 ticks (4.8s).
They are created at an anvil with one steel bar, requiring level 34 Smithing and granting 37.5 experience.
Aside from making chainshot cannonballs, they are used to create the Ivandis flail by linking the enchanted emerald sickle (b) and the rod of Ivandis together.
Chains can be freely obtained from a crate in the old Myreque Hideout under Old Man Ral's house during A Taste of Hope. After the quest, it can be obtained again from the same place, but the player can only collect one at a time without performing the drop trick.

The item was added to the game, replacing the chain from A Taste of Hope. While visible in the anvil's Smithing interface and obtainable from the crate of chains, attempting to smith it or pick it up after dropping it on the floor yielded the message "That Sailing item is unavailable on this world.". |
Trivia
- When Sailing was released, these replaced chain, a similar item with a different examine text. That item is now unobtainable.
- Unlike in the RuneScape 3 equivalent of A Taste of Hope, Legacy of Seergaze, the chain used to create the Ivandis flail is made from steel, rather than being made out of silvthrill.
