Cannon (facility)

On this page

A cannon is a boat facility that can be built and is involved in boat combat. Cannons have a 7 tick attack speed, a 15-tile range, and can only fire cannonballs up to their own tier (e.g. an iron cannon can fire bronze and iron cannonballs, but not steel cannonballs).

A sloop can shoot two cannons at once from the same side, while the other smaller boats only allow one cannon.

Cannonball firing costs can be greatly reduced by building a ballistic attractor, which automatically recovers 60% of cannonballs fired (equivalent to roughly 2.5 cannonballs fired per cannonball).

Preferred cannonballs can be set by using them on a cannon to avoid automatically using the highest tier you are carrying. Crewmates have preferred cannonballs as well, configurable in the crewmates panel.

While an anchor is dropped, or the sails are unset, and the helm is manned, the boat can be turned on the spot to quickly face new targets.

Build restrictions

A sloop has four facility hotspots where cannons can be built (two on each side) and can have a maximum of two cannons built at once, while the other boats can only have one cannon built on them.

On a sloop, the cannons can both be placed on the same side, in order to shoot with both at once with the help of crewmates.

The two facility hotspots towards the back of a sloop only allow cannons (or balistic attractors), while the other two are more generic and additionally allow movement or provisioning facilities to be built.

A visible Sailing boost can be used to build a higher tier cannon. Visible boosts for Sailing and Ranged levels can also be used to fire from cannons.

Player-manned cannons

Both crewmates and players fire cannonballs at a 7 tick speed. Player-manned cannons are more effective than crewmate-manned ones.

When a player mounts a cannon, the damage of the cannonballs are affected by:

  • the type of cannon used
  • the type of cannonballs used
  • Ranged-boosting prayers such as Rigour
  • the player's visible Ranged level
  • The player's ranged accuracy and Ranged strength bonuses. Bonuses from the weapon, shield, and ammunition slots are excluded from this calculation.
  • set bonuses (like void robes)
  • temporary visible boosts (like a perildance bitter)

A player operating a cannon gains both Sailing and Ranged experience.

Crewmate-manned cannons

The damage of crewmate-manned cannons directly scales with:

  • the sailing level of players
  • the privateering stat of crewmates (max hit multipler from 0.70x up to 0.85x)
  • the type of cannon and cannonballs fired

Crewmates also have a greater restriction on what angle they can fire cannons at and can only shoot at enemies more directly in front of the cannon barrel.

When a crewmate operates a cannon, only Sailing experience is gained.

  1. ^ The Construction level requirement can be bypassed by paying a gold fee to a Shipwright, but only up to mithril.
  2. ^ A player manning a cannon increases its accuracy to this amount. This type of accuracy is considered Heavy Ranged.

Cannon Max Hit Calculator

Due to an update, the information in this article may be out-of-date.
Reason: The crewmate formula doesn't account for the player's Sailing level anymore. The exact formula is currently unknown.

Extra Info

  • Cannons benefit from the player’s ranged accuracy and ranged strength bonuses. Bonuses from the weapon, shield, and ammunition slots are excluded from this calculation.
    • Take precaution with items where the applied strength bonus is conditional, eg. a charged Dizana's Quiver.

Changes

Date Changes
1 April 2026
(Update)
  • Applied a buff to cannons when they are actively manned by a player, ensuring that a player using a cannon is on par to the DPS of traditional combat +2 Crew members using cannons.
  • Enabled ranged modifiers such as the Void Armour effect and Ranged Prayers to work in cannon combat, meaning your worn ranged gear will now correctly apply its stats to the overall damage.
18 March 2026
(Update)
  • The attack speed of all cannons was decreased from 5 ticks (3s) to 7 ticks (4.2s). To compensate, their accuracy and strength were increased.
  • Crewmates no longer use a player's visible Sailing level to calculate their maximum hit with a cannon.
  • You can now build two cannons on the same side of your Sloop.
10 December 2025
(Update)

Cannons can now be used with a temporary sailing boost.

Trivia

  • Previously, before both cannons could be placed on the same side, the player was able to attack with both cannons simultaneously if the target was positioned directly in front of or behind the boat with a cannon on either side, or by quickly alternating the orientation of the boat back and forth so each cannon angled towards the target, taking turns to shoot.
A player attacking a hammerhead shark positioned directly in front of them with both cannons.
