Sawmill

A sawmill is a shop which also serves as a facility, and facilitates the creation of planks. The sawmill operator working there can turn seven different kinds of logs into planks for a fee, and also sells Construction supplies: saws, bolts of cloth, and three kinds of nails; they share the same stock. Players can have their logs converted to planks by using the sawmill operator's "Buy planks" option. He is able to create regular planks, oak planks, teak planks, mahogany planks, camphor planks, ironwood planks, and rosewood planks for the player assuming they have the requisite unnoted logs and enough coins.

There are currently four sawmills that are known to exist in Gielinor. One sawmill is in the Lumber Yard north-east of Varrock, another is in the Woodcutting Guild, a third in Prifddinas, and a fourth in Auburnvale. Access to the sawmill in the Woodcutting Guild requires 60 Woodcutting in order to enter the Woodcutting Guild. The sawmill in Prifddinas requires completion of Song of the Elves. The sawmill in Auburnvale is less than half the distance to a bank than the one in the Woodcutting Guild, making it the closest sawmill to a bank of all sawmill locations.

Sawmill vouchers can be redeemed at any sawmill to receive twice as many planks per log. For example, a player that converts 1 Rosewood log with 1 sawmill voucher in their inventory will receive 2 Rosewood planks, saving 7,500 and the time that would have been spent woodcutting. Players must have sufficient space in their inventory or plank sack to do so, or the vouchers will not be used, with the excess logs that cannot be converted into 2 planks (due to lack of inventory space) being converted into 1 plank (without using a voucher) instead, which is more costly for the player.

Auburnvale's sawmill is currently the closest one to a bank.

Note: The stock is shared amongst the shops at each location.

If there are less than 50 Bolts of cloth in stock, 50 is added to the store's stock when the interface is reopened. The same is true for Bronze nails, but with a threshold of 100 stock instead of 50.

An efficient method to make regular or oak planks is obtain a full inventory of logs, take them to the Sawmill Operator and turn them into planks, then fill your Plank sack before obtaining a new inventory of logs. You can also make a small trek north to the Wilderness and fill a looting bag with the planks and obtain a new inventory to turn into planks, allowing an extra 25 logs per trip.

• Although you can carry 28 items in the looting bag you will have to go to a bank to empty the bag before you can use those planks, as the bag is Deposit Only, so this method is only efficient if you are intending to cut regular/oak trees to take to the sawmill operator after the looting bag is full of planks from your first visit.
• Hardcore Ironmen who do not want to risk death by entering the wilderness may choose to chop the oak trees next to the mill, turn them into planks, then run them back to the bank with an inventory of planks which weigh half as much as logs. When returning to the mill to chop oaks, you will then have an empty inventory. This method dramatically conserves run energy and saves time on banking oak logs.

Note: You cannot fill both the looting bag and your inventory with logs and take them to the sawmill operator as he will only supply you with planks from logs that are in your inventory.

There is a hot-air balloon slightly south of the sawmill that could be used from Castle Wars, requiring completion of Enlightened Journey and having the Varrock route unlocked. Each trip would require a ring of dueling and a willow log. The ring of dueling can also be used to travel to Ferox Enclave to restore run energy via the Pool of Refreshment.

For those with 99 Crafting, the hot-air balloon just outside the Crafting Guild can be used to travel to the Lumberyard for one willow log, using the Crafting cape to teleport back to the Crafting Guild for quick and easy banking, without additional teleportation costs.

Another teleportation method is available through the ring of the elements. Using it to teleport to the Earth Altar puts the player very close to the Lumber Yard. Alternating between the Earth Altar teleport and to Castle Wars with the ring of dueling yields a quick turn around between a sawmill and a bank. This does require investing in ring of the elements, which costs 813,802, and it is charged with one of each elemental rune and one law rune (costing 144 per teleport), up to a maximum of 10,000 charges (costing 1,440,000 to fully charge).

Due to its exceedingly high cost, players are strongly advised against using lumberyard teleports, with each single-use scroll costing 3,172 coins.

Using the Sawmill in the Woodcutting Guild, the player can make a full load of planks in 20 seconds by using a charged skills necklace and ring of dueling. Alternatively there is a bank chest in the western part of the guild.

While the Sawmill operator in Crwys district of Prifddinas is a less efficient method of producing planks from previously obtained logs, it can be a very viable way of turning the nearby cut teak or mahogany trees into planks and subsequently banking them.

Players can expect upwards of 500 teak or mahogany planks an hour with this method.

Making planks at the Auburnvale sawmill is the most efficient method for plankmaking via banked logs as it is the closest sawmill to a bank. You can make up to 5400 planks per hour with 27 logs (averaging 18 second trips) and up to 6400 with 25 logs using log basket and plank sack (averaging 28 second trips).
