Gem rocks can be mined through the Mining skill. A Mining level of 40 is required to mine gem rocks, granting 65 Mining experience per gem.

Normal gem rocks can be mined in Shilo Village after a player has completed the Shilo Village quest, in the Lunar Isle mine after Lunar Diplomacy, or on The Onyx Crest after 47 Sailing. The rocks regenerate 99 ticks (59.4 seconds) after being mined. Wearing a charged amulet of glory triples the success rate of mining these gem rocks.^[1] There is also another kind of gem rock which randomly appears during the Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup minigame with a 5% chance per event.^[2] These rocks can be mined three times before they despawn.

The Shilo Village mine in the north-west part of the village has two sections: overground and underground. The underground section is only available for players who have completed Medium Karamja Diary, and it includes significantly more gem rocks than on the surface as well as a Bank Deposit Chest. For those who can only access the gem rocks on the surface, using a gem bag can extend trips.

Mining enhancers do not work on gem rocks, however wearing either a celestial ring or celestial signet will slightly improve mining success rate due to their passive Mining boosts.

Standard gem rocks deplete and produce one uncut gem on every successful mining attempt, and the Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup rocks can be mined three times before depleting. On average, each gem received is worth 327.06.

The probability to succeed on a given mining attempt scales with Mining level according to the figure below. Wearing a charged amulet of glory, amulet of glory (t), or amulet of eternal glory increases the success rate considerably.

Equipment

Celestial rings and signets provide an invisible +4 boost to Mining level, regardless of charges.
Prospector kit boosts Mining experience by 2.5%.
Amulet of glory increases the success rate when charged.
Mining gloves, Mining capes, Varrock armour, and charged celestial rings do not provide any chance to receive extra resources.

Trivia

When a gem rock is mined, the experience lamp sound will play. This is also the same sound as when a gem is mined from a normal ore rock.
Gem rocks do not access the gem pre-roll table that provides gems from normal ore rocks.
