Thieving

Quest the opening, then mix stalls, blackjack, knights, artefacts, and high-level targets.

QUICK WIN

Dodgy necklaces and the Shadow Veil spell materially improve many pickpocket routes.

UNDERSTANDING THIEVING

Learn the system before you optimise the loop.

Thieving is a support skill with several viable routes. The best method is not automatically the one with the largest experience-rate number: startup time, travel, real input prices, useful outputs, and the amount of attention you can sustain all belong in the decision.

This guide treats levels as unlocks rather than a single uninterrupted race to 99. Use the route below as a strong default, then switch when a quest, diary, equipment upgrade, or account goal makes another method more valuable to you.

01

Pickpocket success depends on Thieving level, target, and applicable bonuses. Failure causes damage and a brief stun.

02

The Rogue outfit doubles many pickpocket loot rolls. It does not double every Thieving reward system, so verify the method.

03

Dodgy necklaces can prevent a failed pickpocket stun, and Shadow Veil adds another avoidance roll where applicable.

04

Stalls, artefacts, minigames, and pickpocketing have different failure and movement models; comparing only peak XP hides the attention cost.

Levels 1–42: Questing

4 detailed notes

Early levels can be skipped by completing quests that give Thieving experience. Completing Biohazard, Hazeel Cult, Fight Arena, Tower of Life, and Tribal Totem grants a total of 7,200 experience, which will get the player from level 1 to 24. These quests can be easily done at a low level and they have minimal requirements, however some of them involve some sort of combat.

Furthermore, completing The Queen of Thieves, The Giant Dwarf, Death to the Dorgeshuun, The Golem, Creature of Fenkenstrain, Twilight's Promise, Ethically Acquired Antiquities, The Feud, and Death on the Isle grants a total additional 41,500 experience, which will get the player up to level 42.

Levels 1–36/45: Chambers of Xeric thieving room

7 detailed notes

From level 1 to 45, you can train Thieving in the Chambers of Xeric raid atop Mount Quidamortem in the Kebos Lowlands. Bring a lockpick (can obtain from a Scavenger inside the raid), then reload the raid until the first room is a thieving room. Steal from 4 chests in a circular motion and you can expect experience rates of up to 30,000–50,000 experience an hour. Simply pick the locks until you get the prompt that you can't carry anymore grubs, drop the grubs, then continue picking locks -- do not place the grubs in the trough, as doing so will complete the room and lock you out of further Thieving experience for the rest of the raid. The easiest way to get to the Chambers of Xeric on a fresh account is by taking a minecart to Mount Quidamortem from Port Piscarilius for 20 coins.

Experience rates can be improved by scaling the raid to up to 100 players, which significantly reduces the chest respawn time. In certain room layouts, it’s possible to rotate between just two chests due to the fast respawn rate. Some players position their camera and character in a specific way to allow near-continuous clicking between the two chests without moving, improving both experience per hour and ease of use.

It only requires about one hour of raid time to level from 1-40.

Levels 1–5: Men/Women

2 detailed notes

From level 1 to 5, pickpocket men or women around Gielinor. Players who have their respawn point in Lumbridge can do so around Lumbridge Castle and simply die to regain Hitpoints. Alternatively, a man by the Draynor Village Agility Course start can be trapped inside the house so that he will stay in place. Reaching level 5 takes 49 successful pickpockets.

Levels 1–99: Sorceress's Garden

4 data rows

The Sorceress's Garden minigame consists of navigating through a maze while avoiding guardians to pick fruit and squeeze them into juice. A pestle and mortar is used to squeeze the fruit into juice and a beer glass is used to hold the squeezed juice. Beer glasses can be bought from the Grand Exchange, or found by searching the shelves in the Sorceress's house before you teleport into the garden. Only one sq'irk can be obtained per trip through a garden.

To unlock access to the Sorceress’s garden, talk to Osman in front of the palace about sq'irk juice. He is also the one to whom you trade your glasses of sq'irk juice in return for Thieving experience.

Experience rates are unknown for some of the lower level gardens. Sorceress's Summer Garden (requiring 65 Thieving) provides a maximum of 150,000 per hour, however 'realistic' experience rates are closer to 140,000 experience per hour, given the need to bank the sq'irk once inventory is full.

FOUR EDITORIAL STARTING POINTS

Shortlisted routes with executable instructions.

Use the finder above for the complete method library. These four routes are the fan-guide shortlist: each includes its setup, repeatable sequence, realistic rate band, and most important failure point.

01

1–45MEDIUM ATTENTION

REQUIREMENTS

Target level; Hosidius access for fruit stalls

INVENTORY / LOADOUT

Empty inventory, food for pickpockets, seed box optional

EXECUTION
  1. Use men/women only until a stall becomes reliably faster.
  2. At fruit stalls, use two stalls for the 42.75k ceiling or one for roughly 34.2k.
  3. Drop low-value produce without interrupting the theft cycle.
02

49–84LOW ATTENTION

EXECUTION
  1. Accept an assignment and identify the target house.
  2. Use guard line-of-sight tiles and the shortest safe route to take the artefact.

THIEVING CALCULATOR

Turn a level goal into hours and materials.

Select a method for its realistic experience-rate band. Add XP and GP per action when you want an exact resource estimate for your chosen item.

ESTIMATED BUDGETAdd GP eachGross inputs; resale and tax are not deducted

The level formula is exact. Time and budget are planning estimates: your equipment, banking, failures, attention, and live Grand Exchange prices determine the real result.

SETUP PROGRESSION

Upgrade the part that actually controls the rate.

THE ROUTE

From level 1 to cape

1

1–25

Quest and cake stalls

Build a small food stack while skipping the weakest pickpocket rates. The opening objective is access, not perfect efficiency. Use quests and inexpensive equipment to compress levels where possible, and avoid over-investing in a method you will outgrow quickly.
2

25–55

Fruit stalls or blackjacking

Stalls are gentler; blackjacking is faster and click-intensive.This is where the skill settles into a repeatable loop. Upgrade the parts of the setup that affect every action, measure a representative session, and keep travel or banking from becoming the hidden bottleneck.
3

55–91

Ardougne knights or artefacts

Knights are social and rhythmic; artefacts add movement and variety. At the mid-game checkpoint, compare the fastest route with account progress, useful outputs, and attention. A slightly slower method can be more efficient overall when it also supplies quests, diaries, or another skill.
4

91–99

Master farmers, elves, or Vyres

Choose useful seeds, rare drops, or a steadier experience loop.Late-game training is a sustainability problem. Recheck prices and unlocks, alternate high-focus sessions with calmer ones, and choose a route you can repeat without turning the cape into a chore.
LOWER-INTENSITY ALTERNATIVE

Pyramid Plunder offers a change of pace and a chance at a valuable sceptre.

LEVEL REFERENCE

Milestones worth planning around

These are decision points, not instructions to stop. Boostable requirements and quest gates can change when an unlock becomes usable.

LevelUnlockWhy it matters
25Fruit stallsA calm early route with useful fruit.
38Master farmersSeed gathering begins, improving greatly later.
45Blackjacking higher targetsVery active, fast training becomes available.
55Ardougne knightsA popular social pickpocket loop.
82VyresRare-drop money-making route after questing.
85ElvesHigh-level pickpocketing with valuable uniques.

QUEST ROUTING

Let account progress do part of the grind.

Quest experience is most valuable when it skips slow early methods or opens a training system you will keep using.

QUEST 1

Fight Arena

Includes an early Thieving requirement and broad combat rewards.

QUEST 2

The Feud

Introduces blackjacking and grants substantial early Thieving XP.

QUEST 3

Song of the Elves

Required for Prifddinas elf pickpocketing.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Thieving FAQ

When do pickpockets stop failing?

It depends on the target and bonuses; many high-level targets never become guaranteed. Diaries, dodgy necklaces, Shadow Veil, and positioning still matter.

Is blackjacking required?

No. It is fast but demanding. Knights, artefacts, Pyramid Plunder, and modern alternatives provide strong progression with different attention profiles.
