Ranged

Use cheap ammunition for the base, then scale into Slayer, chinning, or bossing.

QUICK WIN

Ava’s devices are cornerstone unlocks because they recover ammunition and improve the whole grind.

UNDERSTANDING RANGED

Learn the system before you optimise the loop.

Ranged is a combat skill with several viable routes. The best method is not automatically the one with the largest experience-rate number: startup time, travel, real input prices, useful outputs, and the amount of attention you can sustain all belong in the decision.

This guide treats levels as unlocks rather than a single uninterrupted race to 99. Use the route below as a strong default, then switch when a quest, diary, equipment upgrade, or account goal makes another method more valuable to you.

01

Ranged level affects both accuracy and maximum hit, while ammunition strength, weapon stats, prayers, and potions complete the damage calculation.

02

Rapid style shortens the attack interval for most weapons and is normally preferred for training. Accurate and longrange have situational roles.

03

Ammunition cost is a rate, not a one-time purchase. Ava's devices recover compatible projectiles and can change the economics of a long grind.

04

Monster defence is style-specific. High Ranged defence can make melee or Magic the better answer even when your Ranged level is higher.

Levels 1–32/36: Questing

2 detailed notes

Early levels can be skipped by completing quests that give Ranged experience. Completing Shadow of the Storm (putting the experience reward on Ranged), Death to the Dorgeshuun, and Horror from the Deep grants a total of 16,662.5 experience, which will get the player from level 1 to 32. The level 40 Ranged requirement for Temple of Ikov can be bypassed by wielding knives or darts whilst wielding ice arrows, allowing for a further 10,500 experience. This will get the player up to level 36.

Levels 1–45: Using dwarf multicannon

4 detailed notes

Using the dwarf multicannon, once assembled, offers the fastest experience up to level 45. Players must have completed Dwarf Cannon quest to use and assemble their own dwarf multicannon, but there are no level requirements to assemble and use one. The cannon offers much higher damage output compared to other options at low levels, as it has a max hit of 30 with regular steel cannonballs regardless of the player's Ranged level. The accuracy of the multicannon is affected by the accuracy of the player's selected attack style, either ranged or melee, taking into account the attack bonus for that particular style.

Cannoning can be fairly expensive, however. At level 45, chinning becomes a lot faster and is usually a cheaper alternative.

Levels 1–45/99: Gemstone Crab

2 detailed notes

For more information, see Gemstone Crab/Strategies.

The Gemstone Crab is the premier idle training method for Ranged. The crab has unlimited Hitpoints, no defensive stats, stands still, only burrows once every 10 minutes and can be reengaged with two clicks.

General training notes

3 data rows

Using the rapid attack style will offer the highest damage output and the fastest experience rates. For chinchompas, the rapid attack style is called 'Medium fuse'. Longrange should only be used to train Defence while throwing chinchompas. Use the best ranged armour available to maximise damage output.

Ava's devices return a percentage of certain ammunition fired. They are obtained from Ava after completing Animal Magnetism, which requires level 30 Ranged. Wearing one of the devices will save a lot of money and time when using certain Ranged weapons (such as darts or shortbows), as the player does not need as much ammunition or to pick it up as often. Ammunition recovery will not work if wearing a metallic body.

If picking up ammunition, speak to the Ranged combat tutor to toggle whether or not the ammunition will automatically be equipped.

  • Void Knight equipment with the Void ranger helm is best against low defence monsters due to its damage-boosting set effect, while crystal armour or Masori armour are much better against higher defence monsters. Getting the void full set is not worthwhile timewise unless training to 99 using the fastest methods possible, however it is useful for Vorkath, low-switch Zulrah, Theatre of Blood, and it is required for an elite Western Provinces Diary task. Completing the hard Western Provinces diary unlocks the elite upgrade for the void knight top and robe for an extra 400 Pest Control points.
  • ^ Also requires a Vorkath's head, which is obtainable after Dragon Slayer II.

Recommended weapons and armour

3 detailed notes

Darts are the best weapon to use for damage output and cost, especially with a wooden blowpipe or an offhand item with ranged strength (such as a twisted buckler or odium ward). Either use the highest-level darts available up to amethyst (with an hourly cost of 114,600 coins), or use adamant darts or mithril darts as a more budget option (with an hourly cost of 20,160 coins and 5,880 coins respectively). Other options include:

Equipment should be geared towards ranged strength if possible, such as void Knight equipment or masori armour. If those aren't available, focus on prayer bonus to make offensive prayers cheaper/more convenient; ranged accuracy is unnecessary against the zero defense crab.

REQUIREMENTS & SETUP
  • At level 46 Ranged, a crossbow firing ruby bolts (e) becomes the strongest weapon until level 65-70 Ranged, as the ruby bolt passive effect gives a huge chunk of experience when it activates.

Equipment choice

2 detailed notes

Items will be listed in order of how much they increase general ranged damage per second. In nearly all cases, optimising for offensive stats is more effective than optimising for defensive or balanced stats, especially when fighting low-offence, high hp monsters. In addition, optimising for ranged strength is usually better than optimising for accuracy except against high-defence monsters.

Note: This doesn't include elite void knight equipment or void knight equipment which in many cases can be best-in-slot for training, providing the player uses the set. It also doesn't include the salve amulet(ei) or the slayer helmet (i) which can both be best-in-slot in specific use cases. The Wiki's DPS calculator can be used to determine which gear provides the highest DPS for a specific monster.

RANGED CALCULATOR

Turn a level goal into hours and materials.

Select a method for its realistic experience-rate band. Add XP and GP per action when you want an exact resource estimate for your chosen item.

SETUP PROGRESSION

Upgrade the part that actually controls the rate.

THE ROUTE

From level 1 to cape

1

1–30

Shortbows and early quests

Train on low-defence targets with inexpensive arrows. The opening objective is access, not perfect efficiency. Use quests and inexpensive equipment to compress levels where possible, and avoid over-investing in a method you will outgrow quickly.
2

30–60

Bone crossbow or darts

Choose low-cost ammunition and targets you can hit consistently. This is where the skill settles into a repeatable loop. Upgrade the parts of the setup that affect every action, measure a representative session, and keep travel or banking from becoming the hidden bottleneck.
3

60–80

Slayer and stronger crossbows

Safe spots and task bonuses make useful account progress. At the mid-game checkpoint, compare the fastest route with account progress, useful outputs, and attention. A slightly slower method can be more efficient overall when it also supplies quests, diaries, or another skill.
4

80–99

PvM or burst training

Bossing is productive; chinchompas are faster but demand a serious budget.Late-game training is a sustainability problem. Recheck prices and unlocks, alternate high-focus sessions with calmer ones, and choose a route you can repeat without turning the cape into a chore.
LOWER-INTENSITY ALTERNATIVE

Cannoning Slayer tasks accelerates Ranged while preserving your active combat style, at a substantial GP cost.

LEVEL REFERENCE

Milestones worth planning around

These are decision points, not instructions to stop. Boostable requirements and quest gates can change when an unlock becomes usable.

LevelUnlockWhy it matters
28Dorgeshuun crossbowA famously cheap early members weapon after questing.
40Green dragonhideThe core free-to-play Ranged armour tier.
50Magic shortbowA fast general weapon with a useful special attack.
61Rune crossbowA major iron and main-account PvM checkpoint.
70Black dragonhide and crystal pathsStrong mid-game armour and weapon options.
75+Blowpipe and endgame weaponsSpecialised high-output equipment begins to open.

QUEST ROUTING

Let account progress do part of the grind.

Quest experience is most valuable when it skips slow early methods or opens a training system you will keep using.

QUEST 1

Animal Magnetism

Unlocks Ava's devices and should be treated as part of the training setup.

QUEST 2

The Lost Tribe

Opens the inexpensive Dorgeshuun crossbow route.

QUEST 3

Horror from the Deep

Unlocks god books, useful early off-hands for several styles.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Ranged FAQ

Which attack style should I use?

Rapid is generally the training default because attacking sooner outweighs the small accuracy gain from Accurate. Longrange is used when distance or Defence XP matters.

When are chinchompas worth it?

When several targets can be stacked and the time saved justifies both the chin and prayer costs. They are a budget decision, not a mandatory unlock.
