The Mercenary Captain is the captain of the mercenaries outside the Desert Mining Camp, and was hired to guard the entrance to prevent unauthorised people from going in. The Mercenary Captain plays a role in the quest The Tourist Trap, in which he is portrayed as a hot-headed and angry individual, and must be provoked to the point of outrage so that he initiates combat with the player himself, rather than having his mercenaries do his dirty work for him. There is no attack option in the drop down menu, so a workaround exists by manually casting magic spells and clicking him.
Once killed, the captain 'drops' the Metal key, which is automatically added to the player's inventory with the message "The mercenary captain drops a metal key on the floor. You quickly grab the key and add it to your inventory." appearing in the chatbox.
Although he only has a max hit of 5, be aware that desert heat applies in the area that he has fought in, and without a way to protect against the heat like a waterskin, the heat can hit you for upwards of 10 damage.

Trivia
- He appears to be wielding the Defensive shield from the Warriors' Guild in one hand.
- Every time you kill him the message "You kill the captain!" appears in the chatbox.
- If a player is attacked by a Mercenary before getting dumped in the desert, they will attempt to run/walk back into the Mining Camp and attack the mercenary that previously attacked them.
- Because the Metal Key is directly added to the player's inventory, killing the captain with only recoil still counts.
