Glowing fungus

Glowing fungus is a quest item used in the Haunted Mine quest. It is obtained by picking the glowing fungus growing on the 4th level of the Abandoned Mine.

The fungus is used to light the way in the lower parts of the mine where fire-based light sources are extinguished and tinderboxes become damp tinderboxes when the player is dropped into a large pool, hence why a glowing fungus is needed.

Being used to growing in a very dark cave, the fungus is very susceptible to sunlight and will crumble to ashes if taken out of the confines of the mine or dropped. Additionally, random events like the Maze Random Event will also cause the mushroom to disintegrate.

If bringing a non-mushroom light source to the bottom floor, even inextinguishable light sources such as Kandarin headgear 1 or a Firemaking cape, it will not work. This is because when dropping into the pool, It's unlikely any of your light sources will dry off until you leave this dank cave., which renders everything but the fungus useless.

When trying to progress further into the cave down the stairs without the fungus the player will state: "It's kind of dark down here. I should probably find some form of light before going further." The player is taken to a separate "dark" map rather than the normal destination with the darkness mechanic, similar to the Temple of Ikov dungeon where the Boots of lightness are obtained.
