The Chaos Altar is a runic altar upon which chaos runes are crafted from pure essence, providing 8.5 Runecraft experience per essence imbued. Players can also use a chaos core to craft chaos runes, which provide 85 Runecraft experience per core. Level 35 Runecraft is required to craft chaos runes.

Players may create a chaos tiara here by using either a chaos talisman or a tiara on the altar whilst having both in their inventory, granting 37.5 Runecraft experience. A catalytic tiara can also be created here by using a catalytic talisman and gold tiara, granting 42.5 Runecraft experience.

Upon entering the Chaos Altar, the music track Complication plays. Entering the Chaos Altar through either the mysterious ruins or the Abyss is required for completion of the Wilderness Easy Diary. It is possible to enter the Chaos Altar using the mysterious ruins while under the effect of tele block.

The entrance to the altar can be found south-east of the Dark Warriors' Fortress in level 9 Wilderness, the altar can also be accessed through the Abyss. It can also be accessed via the Tunnel of Chaos after partial completion of the What Lies Below quest.

To enter the mysterious ruins, players either have to use a chaos talisman on the ruins, or click "Enter" on the ruins while wearing a chaos tiara. Alternatively, a catalytic talisman or tiara can be used.

Upon entering the ruins, players must navigate four levels of a chaotic maze to reach the altar itself. However, players who have completed the quest What Lies Below can bypass the Wilderness and parts of the maze by accessing the Chaos Altar via a portal at the end of the Tunnel of Chaos, whose entrance is found in the Saradomin statue north-east of Varrock. Accessing the altar this way still requires a chaos talisman, chaos tiara or catalytic tiara, and it places the player on the third level of the maze. A catalytic talisman cannot be used to access the altar through this portal.

The maximal amount of chaos runes that can be crafted in one run is 620, by carrying one Colossal Pouch full of essence and 27 chaos cores with a Runecraft level of at least 85 for the maximum capacity in the colossal pouch. This would give 2635 experience.

However, obtaining considerable amounts of chaos cores is time-consuming.

The maximal amount of chaos runes crafted in one run without using cores is 134. This would be achieved by having 85 Runecraft (for the Colossal Pouch and double chaos runes) and carrying 67 essence to craft (27 in the normal inventory along with 40 in the Colossal Pouch). This would result in 569.5 experience.
