Bloated toads are used to catch chompy birds during and after the Big Chompy Bird Hunting quest. Their dyed variant, coloured toads, are used during Mourning's End Part I. Bloated toads can be obtained by using ogre bellows which have been filled with swamp gas on a swamp toad. Only three toads may be obtained at one time, and they cannot be banked.
Bloated toads may only be dropped in the ogre areas east and south of Gu'Tanoth. Once dropped, they have a chance of causing a chompy bird to land, lasting 1 minute before exploding and dealing 1-2 damage to all players within one tile (including diagonally). This damage cannot kill players.
Inflating a toad a second time by using filled ogre bellows on a bloated toad will lead to the toad floating away in a comical manner if the player is not in the possession of a ball of wool and a suitable rock; if these materials are available, however, a balloon toad will be created instead.
Spawn mechanics
When placed on the ground, the bloated toad will roll every 25 ticks (15 seconds) for a chance to spawn a chompy bird, and will continue doing so until it either bursts or successfully attracts a bird.[1][2] There is a 1 in 5 chance that a bloated toad attracts a chompy bird each time a roll is made, and up to four rolls can be carried out before a toad bursts.[3] Once a bloated toad has successfully attracted a chompy bird however, it will not attempt to spawn any additional ones.[4] Therefore, a toad will fail to attract a chompy if it fails all four rolls, which works out to about a 41% failure rate. Conversely, players can expect a chompy bird to spawn in around 59% of cases.
| Moment | Spawn chance |
|---|---|
| 25th tick | 20% |
| 50th tick | 16% |
| 75th tick | 12.8% |
| 100th tick | 10.24% |
| No spawn | 40.96% |
Each bloated toad rolls independently of any other toads that may be placed nearby, and the chance to call down a chompy is likewise not influenced in any way by the proximity of the player to the toad.[5] If a bird is successfully lured in, it will land on a random empty tile somewhere between 3 and 10 tiles removed from the bloated toad, forming a 21x21 square spawn area.[6] The landing tile must also have line-of-sight to the bloated toad.[7]
Although no more than three toads can be held in the inventory, there is no limit to how many toads may be placed on the ground simultaneously.[8] As chompy birds will only attempt to devour the toads that spawned them down, and no more rolls are performed by the corresponding toads, it makes no meaningful difference whether the player actively prevents spawned chompy birds from eating the bait or not.
