Mage of Zamorak

Herbert, the Mage of Zamorak, is a member of the Zamorak Magical Institute, and stands around the southern Wilderness mining site and at the Altar of Zamorak in Varrock. He sells runes in his shop, Battle Runes, and teleports players into the Abyss (resulting in a drain of all Prayer points) once the Enter the Abyss miniquest has been completed. He can teleport players even if they are affected by Tele Block.

He sells air, water, earth, fire, mind, body, chaos, death, and blood runes. Before completion of Enter the Abyss, body runes are available to the player to buy, however, once completed, the body runes are replaced with blood runes.

Many runecrafters use the Mage of Zamorak as a shortcut to their preferred altar, although this can be risky as many carry one or more valuable items that could be lost to player killers.

In both places where he can be found, he will refuse to speak to or trade with players wearing any items affiliated with Saradomin or Guthix, though he will still teleports players to the Abyss. Other god items, such as Bandosian or Zarosian items, do not prevent players from speaking to him.

Players may claim a small pouch from him if they lose one.

• The Mage of Zamorak is the solution to the master cryptic clue: Where safe to speak, the man who offers the pouch of smallest size wishes to see your alignment. Wear three Zamorak-related items.

• His name was unknown for nearly seventeen years after his release, but was revealed to be Herbert in Temple of the Eye.
