Avarrocka

Avarrocka, later known as Varrock, was established around year 700 of the Fourth Age. Varrock is the oldest surviving human settlement outside the Kharidian Desert in Gielinor today. It was founded when a tribe found a baby abandoned, and took it as a good omen. That baby was Arrav, a famous hero.^[1]

Avarrocka was originally established by the elders, who were the leaders of a small wandering tribe, and one of the many nomadic tribes of humans that wandered Gielinor during the Fourth Age. When they discovered the child Arrav in the forests of modern-day Misthalin, they saw him as a good omen and established the city of Avarrocka where they found him.

Some years later, the settlement was attacked by goblins in an event known as the Burning of Avarrocka. The city was burned to the ground, and most of the inhabitants were killed. Arrav, who had just returned to the Avarrocka, gathered the survivors and managed to establish peace with the goblins. The city was rebuilt, and in less than three years, it had again become a bustling town.

Not long after, Zemouregal, a powerful Zamorakian Mahjarrat necromancer, invaded Avarrocka with an army of zombies to claim the Shield of Arrav, a powerful shield made by now nearly extinct master smith race, imcando dwarves. His army was slain by none other than the great hero Arrav and the grandson of one of the city's elders with the help of the shield, at the cost of Arrav's life. Zemouregal retreated with the body Arrav, planning to turn him into the undead leader of his armies.

Between 900 and 1000 years, the government of Avarrocka changed to a monarchy, but the precise date is unknown.

In year 1100-1200, vampyres from Morytania invaded Misthalin in the Misthalin–Morytania War, making it all the way to Avarrocka,^[2] but the armies of Misthalin were able to push them back into Morytania. In the final battle of the war, the River Salve was blessed by the Seven Priestly Warriors, making it impassable to the vampyres. Additionally, knights from Avarrocka were at some point sent into the desert, tasked with destroying the Zamorakian mahjarrat Enakhra and her temple, but failed.

It is not exactly known when was Avarrocka renamed to Varrock. The name "Varrock" is mentioned in the Diary of Herbi Flax who supposedly lived in late 4th and early 5th Age, suggesting that the change was made sometime before then in the mid-late 4th Age.
