The Red Reef Trading Company, formerly the Brentwood Trading Company, are a coral dredging company and the antagonists of the Tortugan quest series. Their headquarters is on Red Rock, located in the Red Reef sea. Their primary focus is in harvesting and refining a special type of red coral that has divinational properties, though they have been responsible for other maritime inventions such as the Brentwood Diving Bell.[1]
At the end of Troubled Tortugans, one of their ships appears to be seen fleeing the scene of the Shellbane gryphon attack on the Tortugan eggs located on The Little Pearl.
Their current flagship is called The Zenith.[2]
History
The Red Reef Trading Company was founded in year 144 of the Fifth Age as the Brentwood Trading Company by Spencer Brentwood, who had "an unparalleled drive for success, along with a small loan of one million gold from his father".[3]
In year 152 of the Fifth Age, Brentwood discovered red coral in the Red Reef while on a philanthropic research dive. Further research showed that, when refined correctly, burning the red coral granted divinational abilities. The company's name was changed to the Red Reef Trading Company around this time, due to it becoming their most important substance traded by them.[4]
Around year 169 of the Fifth Age, the supply of red coral in the Red Reef began to dry up.[5] Brentwood confided in a new worker for the company that he planned to move the company's coral dredgers to the Pearl Bank, but that the tortugans that live nearby posed a problem as they would not allow it. He asked this worker to deal with the tortugans by any means necessary,[6] unaware of the fact this worker was actually an adventurer allied with the tortugans who wished to stop the company.
