- Old Grog's name may be a reference to the character Old Gregg from the British comedy series The Mighty Boosh.
- His name may also be a reference to British Royal Navy Admiral Edward Vernon, who was nicknamed "Old Grog" in reference to his grogram coat, and later became the namesake for the drink of the same name.
