Avan Fitzharmon is the man who can be found in Al Kharid mine and plays a big role in the Family Crest quest. Avan has two brothers, Caleb and Johnathon, who also feature in the quest. He is the son of Dimintheis Fitzharmon, and fought in the Siege of Varrock.[1]
After the quest, he can turn steel gauntlets into goldsmith gauntlets. This is free if players have not previously chosen an enchantment for the gauntlets, but if they have, it will cost 25,000 coins. If the Family Pest miniquest has been completed, Avan will give the goldsmith gauntlets directly for free instead. The player can reobtain the goldsmith gauntlets after completion of the quest by right clicking and selecting the "Gauntlets" option, which will allow you to reobtain the gauntlets, even on a free-to-play world.
The gloves boost the Smithing experience gained when smelting a gold ore into a gold bar from 22.5 to 56.2. This is a very popular way to train Smithing, since it is a good balance of cost and speed. On a free-to-play world, Avan will always be referred to as the "Man" and will not talk with the player unless they are a member.
